I dunno - send him money, wait longer than you want but just about what he told you up front = get a great cab.

Seems very close to the exact opposite of what you mention - at least according to everyone else.

Sux if you get something different.... I wonder why.

Any ideas?

I'm probably just getting cranky, but this cab is nothing special, a 215 cab with a tweet, tolex and wheels. I guess what bugs me is he seems to be cranking out the fEarful type cabs at a regular clip. Initially, I was told an 8 week period before he could start ( that put it at early May ). Subsequent emails extended that wait period, until, finally this week, he said he would call Wed or Thurs. , but he never did. And , yes, I have ordered from him before, and it did'nt take nearly this long ( and that cab had to be sent back for an adjustment ). I guess it's just my bad luck or something else, but, man, I could have made good use of this cab on a couple of gigs now. :(

That sucks... I guess Don is a victim of his own success, maybe he is knocking out a string of fEarful/nEarful orders by pseudo-production lining some of those builds??? That's what I would try to do I think.

Whatever the reason its rough treatment you should be left standing in line so long... its hard to wait for custom work and the better the expected results the harder it gets. I recall being on tenterhooks for over a year waiting on my Sadowsky = no fun. I feel your pain - hopefully LDS will get your cab knocked out soon.

yah I hear ya.. all my cab is, is a bow built to the Weber Mich 15" i sent with out a tweeter. I wanted the simplest cab I could get that would bring out the most in the speaker I supplied. If I were you I would just shoot him an email seeing how things are going. Thats what I did.

Ya - I got my 1515/66+1 box out of Don right on schedule [9 weeks] but I have to admit I was a bit of a pest. Emailed for updates confirming the build schedule and ship date several times starting a couple weeks out from my "due date". I must say Don was very professional in communication/replies and I enjoyed chatting with him on the phone a couple of times. I regard his work highly, but he does seem to be getting backed up a bit. Somebody should send thier son over their to work for him this summer and get him caught up / ahead of the curve.

Not quite true lately...

Those of us who ordered around the january/february time frame seem to have waited a lot longer than we were told up front.

I'm real happy with my cab and what I paid for it - but I was quoted an 8 week lead time, and it was ready for pickup just a touch over 18 weeks after I payed my deposit.

I ordered a custom neck from a graphite maker awhile back and waited forever too. Turns out they were slammed after having a booth at NAMM.
Glad to see some quality product makers are doin ok in this economy though.
My luthier said some relly good custom quitar builders are hurtin big time.
Can't wait to hear about last night's gig with the two 15/6's powered by the 9.0 though:hyper:

I placed my order for a 15/6/1 on March 10 so we're going on 15 weeks now after a quoted 8-week delivery. Don says I'm 2 orders away now. In all fairness to Don, he did offer to refund my deposit when I inquired a few weeks back.

No, this is no Dr. Bass - just a guy dealing with too much success!

I recently inquired about the 12/6 complement ot my 15/6 and Don emailed me that within the coming month he hopes to be back to the usual 6-8 week waiting time for new orders.
Sounds reasonable to me. The wait may be protracted but the quality, value and integrity are there in spades IME. Yesterday I gigged my 15/6 under M9 rig outdoors (HS grad party-100 people-plywood box stage in a tent) and since there was some unexplained PA hum we put only the vocals and drums through the PA. The 2 guitards play 100 watt heads through 412s. Volume was moderate and I only had my master volume at 10 o'clock-sounded great! Best cabs ever:bassist:

Sorry about the Dr Bass reference, I was'nt exactly implying that Don was headed in that direction; it was more along the lines of my own impatience and I thought of what the Dr Bass customers must be going through waiting. Actually, I have nothing but good things to say about Dr Bass, as far as my own experience with him goes. I ordered two cabs at different times that were top notch build quality and delivered on time. Obviously, that has changed drastically for the worse. Still, I wish Don was a little bit more conscious of the communication factor, especially when he is getting way behind in delivery times. I know he is swamped, and I know his situation, but, my God, if he is going to be 10 weeks late on a cab, that should be conveyed to the customer, instead of the customer having to pester him with emails. A simple, " Hey, I'm absolutely swamped right now and your cab is going to be much later than I originally thought to build ", message or call would have gone a long way, at least in my case. Watch, I'll get a message tomorrow that says it's ready !

If you guys wanna talk wait time, that's fine I suppose.

Remember: Don is a one man shop. The amount of orders coming in at any time could clearly effect his ability to project completion times. I understand you'd like an email or phone call, but it's much more time efficient for you to check in rather than for him to drop working on what could be your project...
Lucky for Don, he's been really busy since the economy forced him to close his bass only shop. I'm glad the business is there to support his continued cabinet building.
He custom builds great, innovative product.

Dr Bass, on the other hand, build a cookie cutter product, and as a business practice seem to at times take peoples money with no particular care of delivering a product at all.

I'd really appreciate not co-mingling the two as one is very, very clearly not the other.

Agreed!

What I would suggest is that every custom builder should have an order site where they keep track of orders, and anyone can log in and view the status of their order (and where it is in the hopper).

I'm sure there is a program out there that would do this :)

I think it would be bad for business. There are some buyers that wouldn't place the order if they knew the real delivery time before hand. I think that custom builders present best case scenarios rather than worst case to keep their queues full.

IMHO, it hurts business more to say "It'll be 8 weeks, call me for updates" than it does to say "It'll probably be 8 weeks with weekly status updates on my website here" --- when it turns out to be 16 weeks not 12 weeks.
