Make me look metal

Don't listen to the guys who are actually into metal. They aren't allowed to admit that image is important, haha.

If you don't want to lose the hat, at the very least replace it with a black version. Black T-shirt (no V-necks or modern hardcore band shirts, though, many metalheads hate those). Darker jeans, possibly black but dark blue or grey also works. Everything on the cheap side - Italian designer jeans are definitely not a good idea. Do those things and you will not stick out as the "dude who looks like he's never heard of Iron Maiden", which is probably all you really need to do.

Can you turn the hat backwards? I truly doesn't matter though. Just dress the way you want and all will be good. The is this new phenom here in S. FL where death metal bands look like a small group of gangsta now. Flat bill hats cocked to the side, all jumping up and down in unison like a House Of Pain video. I don't get it, but they are still metal cause the music.

You asked and TB spoke, "lose the hat".
"I aint losing the hat" you says.
Well then, I'd say were done here.

Hat, no hat, polos and cargo pants, jeans and a t-shirt, denim vest and bullet belts or leather and spikes, it matters not. Rock out with sincerity and you'll be fine, act like a tourist or its dress up time time and you wont survive.
Be yourself and be honest, no one is really gonna care about the hat or anything else you wear if its who you are.

I've gotten it with:
Pale blue jeans with beer, blood, etc stains and a few frays and rips; Saxon shirt with similar staining; scuffed, dirty old Cons; curly hair is fine, just take no care of it at all and let it get messed up; black denim jacket with similar stains and frays; black aviators (can be geniune or bought for 8 euro at a tourist shop in Barcelona) and grow some scruffy facial hair. Drinking cheap lager also helps a lot.

What sort of metal are you talking? From what you've described it sounds like glam.. could it be Sunset Riot you're doing a show with?

If it is glam type stuff, just rock some tight jeans (maybe cut some holes in them and even wear animal print tights under them), a shirt with the sleeves and maybe neck cut out, some eyeliner and plenty of accessories (necklaces, rings, bracelets.. whatever really!). The main thing is though don't try too hard, it'll show. Just have fun with it, it's only rock n roll!

I posted this in the Thunderbird thread awhile back, but this is me at a semi-recent gig, just to give you an idea! Look up 80s rock video clips also (Guns n Roses, LA Guns, Ratt, Skid Row, Motley Crue etc).

This post makes me laugh. I don't play Glam at all, but it is indeed Sunset Riot we're playing with.

For the record, I'm a metalhead inside, but I was curious what TB had in mind as far as playing the part. No need to be more serious than I am about it =p I suppose I'll have to default to biting the heads off of bats at my next show.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones go with the full suit action and they are the big guns of the Ska Punk genre.

It should be noted though that many 2-nd wave ska and 3-rd wave ska/punk bands wore suits and tried to imitate the "rude boy" fashion of wearing suits and fedoras, so they weren't really breaking a mold here. Though the point you make is important - there isn't really such a thing as a metal "look", same thing with punk, there isn't really a punk "look" either. They're just styles of music, not much else.

Lose the Hat.
Lose the glasses.
Lose the baggy shirt.
Look into the audience instead of at your hand.
Look anywhere BUT at your hand.
Keep your feet apart. Dominate your part of the stage.
Keep your mouth open like you're yelling.
Fix your strap so that you can hold your bass more level, like youre curling it.
Pump some iron.
Dont fall for that "chucks" advice. Get leather boots.
