My "Berklee Defense"???!

WHY in the world would I need or want to "defend" having
attended Berklee??! Or even mentioning it- Fact is, I'm damn proud, and I worked my A** off doing it..

Outside of some real-life touring and playing, it's the single BEST thing I've ever done in evolving as a bassist....Even more so than buying a newer, smaller Bass amp with advanced power-switching systems!

And I find it helps me keep my day job- playing bass.

Can you believe it?? :rolleyes:

Obviously you don't understand. Nobody begrudges you for going to Berklee. Its just that you basically used the fact that you went to Berklee to make it sound like you are better than everybody who didn't.

Reread the below quote again, and tell me this doesn't come off as arrogant and condescending in tone. Maybe thats not how you meant it to sound, but it is why people are ragging on you. The fact that you keep missing this is just giving everybody more cause.

1) Audible differences: Tube vs. Solid State Compared to Class A/Class D ??? Wow! You are stretchiiiiiiiiiiiing- Big time!
Plus, I don;t recall where I learned at Berklee, "as a musician" the musicality factors of Class A, D, A/B, etc. Prolly too busy studying that insignificant stuff, like modes, ya know....

That would leave you wide open for a Berklee joke but I'm not doing it.

I can dig that. Probably 95% of what's discussed here is almost irrelevant to a gigging pro in so far as making music and getting gigs, which is probably why so few gigging pros have time to discuss these things or even have an interest in them.

I have a lot of respect for you "realdeal" for chosing music as your career and toughing it out through a proper program like Berklee.

I know gigging pros who truly don't have a clue about gear... they didn't before they became pros and they still don't. As such that might make their dismissive attitudes towards gear a moot point.

I emailed my local GC in Falls Church VA yesterday to ask when the F1 would be in stock and if pricing had been set yet. Still not in stock and awaiting shipping from Italy, but pricing for the F1 was quoted to me in the email by the store manager as: "Retail is $1419.99 and our selling price will be $849.99."

That's how much mine is going to be. It's supposedly on it's way. They said a few weeks...probably no more than 3, and it's been at least that long. The last time I talked to them, they said the warehouse is still waiting, so who knows. At least my LMII loaner is doing well!

So you've bought the F1 without trying it? Not a criticism, just a question. I've tried the LMII and was favorably impressed. The LMII does not have quite the flexibility of my TF 550b, but the drop in weight is well worth it IMO. I am looking to downsize as much as possible these days. Am waiting for the F1s to come in to A/B with the LMII before I decide

Not quite. I bought the LMII, but when the first F1 comes in, it's got my name on it. I'm going to A/B the two as well...and the winner comes home. I get to trade my LMII for the full value if I want the F1. From what I've read about it, I'm thinking I'll like the F1 better anyways. I'm not crazy about the little nuance type differences, so I doubt it'll be THAT much of a difference to me anyways.

Okay, this settles it once and for all. There *is* a tone difference between the two. This is from Peter Murray, International Promotion, Marketing and Artist Relations for Markbass:

"The digital power amp of the F1 gives it a different sound, faster and crisper but, to most who have heard it, not as warm as the Little Mark II.

Seems to be in line with what most that have played both felt but it's kind of nice to hear the same from the builder as well.

I'm leaning towards the LMII myself, but would love to have it the same size as the F1.

So I'm really looking forward to bassgod0dmw's review soon.

The sound is actually quite different (based on my experience with my SD800 and LMII). This is not surprising, since they are very different (class A/B versus class D power amp) Also, remember, the F1 is actually the same footprint as the LMII... just about an inch shorter in height... smaller, but not massively smaller, and not enough for me to give up that warm tone of the LMII! The SD800 (the bigger version of the f1) sounds great too... so it's more of a 'different' thing than better or worse.

I guess it looks like a bigger difference than it is, and if that's all it is, I suppose that puts all the more advantage in the LMII's court.

Actually I'm a little surprised you're favoring the LMII since your posts have left me feeling you might have had a preference for the "faster and crisper" F1.

Evidently the LMII lacks nothing in punch and quickness?

I have never played the F1, but am assuming the tone will be very close to my SD800, since the design seems to be the same. The more I play both the LMII and the SD800, there is just enough difference between the two to make me enjoy the LMII a little more. I actually don't hear the SD800 as 'quicker' at all. It does have a different character to the low end (not quite as fat), and a more forward upper mid voicing (which is probably where the 'quick' comments come from). However, the LMII is about as 'quick' and tight as you would need.

Here's another way to look at it... the LMII sounds like a really good amp, the SD800 sounds like a really good lightweight amp, if that makes sense. The SD800 is MASSIVELY loud, but does have some of the quirks of other featherweight amps like the Walter Woods and AI stuff. However, if you were to hide the LMII behind a curtain and listen to it, you would guess that it weighs 25 pounds and is a full two space sized head. Is that the class A/B amp versus the class D design... who knows!

The cool thing about the F1, is my measurements show that it will fit in the Slimcase and Portabag's Notebook PC compartment. That's pretty darn cool, and I assum if you match it with the right cab (like the SD800), it will sound awesome!

IMO and IME.

Edit: TBer Elmon greatly prefers the SD800 voicing to the LMII... so again, personal preference, and more 'different' than 'better or worse'. The F1 is going to kill also... just a little more 'digital' sounding, for lack of a better word.
