McGregor- Mayweather

Lately, I have seen some excellent Boxing matches on SHOBOX, HBO, and others, there are some excellent up-and-comers, Gervonta Davis on this undercard, and Regis Prograis come to mind. Maybe because I boxed enough to appreciate what a skilled fighter brings to the ring....

Do you remember Mark Breland? He was the last boxer I really invested my time and energy in following.
I enjoyed the early Tyson years too.

Before "my time" but-
Totally. Breland was a great Olympian, Golden Gloves, and Welterweight champ.

That was a while back (I was just a babe, literally, but I watch many boxing videos, inc. Ali, Louis, etc. DeLa Hoya, Camacho...)

Before he lost it, Tyson was unbeatable, kinda sad. He seems OK now tho.

If you care to check 'em out., SHOBOX especially features some up-and-comers at the beginning of their careers, and there are some very good fights to watch.

"Triple G" and Alvarez as well should be awesome.

Yeah, I'll scope it out. Thanks for the heads up.
As I've gotten older, I've lost some of my tolerance for the brutality of boxing (football for that matter too), but I'll take a casual look.

I never got into MMA, and stopped watching boxing in the mid 90's.
I'll be happy when this obnoxious event is over.

Agreed. And frankly, I think this is one of the most contrived fights ever--and that's saying something!

This sequence of events says it all for me: McGregor camp puts out picture making it look like their man legitimately knocked down his sparring partner. Said partner then comes out and disputes that. A couple days later, Mayweather comes out and says he isn't as good as he used to be--gee, think that was planned to make it seem like the fight will be more competitive, since the picture failed to convince anyone? Then Dana White releases the sparring video, but it's heavily edited. Barf again.

I have no interest in the outcome, but I can't help but notice what a circus this buildup has been.

On the plus side Dana has to be very happy this is deflecting the lime light off yet another failed drug test of Jon Jones. He needs the be banned permanently. He is a fraudulent fighter. He should never be in any pound for pound discussions as his career is clearly flawed.

Although the sport itself has had dire consequences, including deaths in the ring- At its height, it is a Science and an athletic art.

My Dad used to MAKE ME-make me- for training- watch tapes of his favorite- Sugar Ray Robinson, a Master Boxer if there ever was one. Basically, all it taught me was that I could NEVER fight like that. For some reason- I kept getting hit!:roflmao:

Football too, is a monster. Many linebackers & such wind up on crutches in their 40's & 50's, but the athleticism demonstrated on the field is superb and amazing to watch.

Mankind has loved competitive Sports forever.

Why is it contrived? Mayweather has creds, so does CM. Fight fans want to see them match-up in the ring, it was never a question of "will they?" it was always just "How Much?"

Answer-lots. Build-Up, hype??
Gee, ya think!!:roflmao:

I live here, try & get a ticket!

The thing is, this is never going to end.
Whoever loses will want a rematch, so the circus goes on and on and on.

-Mike

I don't think so.
I believe that Mayweather is serious about hanging it up; one last BIG Payday, then he's off to be a promoter which will add to his already large Fleet of private jets.

"The Money Team" is just that!

But fear not, there will be plenty other circuses to come...

Mayweather has been training by running 5k a day.............

Backwards.

That's all your going to see. I would get in a ring with Mayweather for a round or two of boxing no problem.
I would not get in the octagon with CM as he could literally kill me 20 times over in one round.

Its going to be sad as the actual real athlete probably doesn't stand a chance of beating the cowardly boxer.

Sure, they both have credibility, but in different areas. Michael Phelps and the shark both had credibility, too.:D

Tickets--sales are picking up, but the fight isn't sold out. The tickets are unattainable to most because of the insane prices.

I'm no fan of his style, but how exactly is Mayweather not a "real athlete"?

IDK, sounds like you're looking for a match with Mayweather yourself; better hope he wins then! The payday will be bigger.:roflmao:

As an ex-boxer (meaning someone who boxed-not won very much!) I think it best to be cautious about saying you'd get in the ring w/ Floyd. What may appear to be running backwards is in fact back-pedaling, looking for opps to counter-punch, and he was one of the best at that. So were Robinson and the Leonards, Sugar Ray and Benny. Benny Leonard used to deliberately go rounds w/out throwing a punch, dancing/moving to frustrate his opponents, then when he found the timing and saw his opening- Lights out! One of the greatest.
Floyd has fought every contender and won, a perfect record. How that makes him a "cowardly boxer" escapes me.

I have a very strong opinion about who's going to win and how- We'll see!

Boxing is a sport where multiple people die in the ring every year. Those that make it through the meat grinder of the sport often have brain damage and deteriorated bodies. It's not for cowards especially at the championship level. So to criticize a boxer for playing defense seems silly to me. Boxing is celebrated for being the sweet science and brawlers are rarely considered amongst the great boxers of all time. Those spots are generally reaserved for boxers with strategy, slick defense, great skill and athleticism. they say the name of the game is hit and don't get hit. I'd take my chances with CM punk (funny you chose a wrestler who is barely an mma fighter) if I were you as you won't get as much brain damage and he surely doesn't hit as hard.

When you are inundated this weekend with people telling you that Mayweather is the best fighter ever after he punks McGregor and hits 50-0, remember that Julio Cesar Chavez was 89-0 before he lost his first fight and he never turned down anyone or picked his fights as Mayweather has.

Tix available, from $1200 up to... Infinity!:roflmao:

Capacity of T-Mobile= 20,000; my understanding is there are about 3-4K seats left, everyone is gonna make money.
PPV included.

Michael and the Shark not quite as competitive. They could have made it better;
Made Phelps put a steak in his speedos, or something. Not much cred there IMO.

Why not w/ these 2 Fighters? I think they both REALLY want to knock the other O-U-T.

Chavez certainly WAS one of the best in the Ring, his son, not-so-much!
Not sure what you mean by Floyd "picking his fights', IIRC, he fought...everyone there was to challenge...

I don't think being 50-0 makes him the best ever but his resume is stacked with impressive accomplishments. Floyd is a master strategist and at times chose his fights carefully but I wouldn't say he ducked anybody. He wasn't the type to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime but he took on many challenges. I would say he is one of the greats but it's easy to make an argument that guys like Chavez or Sugar Ray Robinson are better despite having losses. Most people don't say Rocky Marciano is the best heavyweight but he was undefeated.

Honestly if you follow mma, Mcgregor has skipped some of the challenges most champions would take on. He has faced few top level wrestlers and when he beat chad Mendez he was coming off the coach. He has won two belts and hasn't defended either one.
