Mesa Boogie M9 Megathread: Pt II

I push mine at times in a large, rehearsal spot that has tons of space through my Dually 215 cab. I got mine from lomo and it is a post-500 S/N head. I've never had a problem yet. I turn it on and it jams.

Ran mine hard last night for 3 hours in a very hot room driving a 4 ohm Epifani 410 with a reggae band. It sits in the bottom of a Gator 3 space rack bag with a spacer screen in the top "open" rack slot. I reached inside at the end and felt the top and back of the amp. It was warm to the touch, but NOT hot. I was totally drenched in sweat, from the top of my head to my socks.

The low end killed! The cab complained a little. Ear plugs!!!!

Cool thanks for the input! Sadly last night my walkabout could not keep up with my band. It always has but we got a little extra swilly and therefore loud. I realized, much as i love the WA, im always at the end of the volume dial. I got a new fretless 55-94 and needed more gain to poke through the mix. Just a slight bump in the mids on the lakie completely distorted the WA preamp. Sorry bout it walkabout. I need more volume and the first thing i thought of was M9.

Those Lakland pre's can be pretty hot. What about adding a cabinet?

True, but i set the trimmer to be similar to my fender jazz. Just a small bump in gain from passive. Im not really a multi cab guy these days though. Gives me an excuse to buy an M9

I used my M9 head tonight at a very loud jam and the provided cab was a Markbass 8x10 (no yellow, said Markbass Amplifiers on the grille...older or newer MB, not sure.)

Anyways, my ears are still ringing (didn't think we would play so loud so no earplugs) and the M9 was absolutely blasting. Gain at 6:00 and master still under 6:00 (prolly 4:30, 5:00 really).

There is honestly no gig I play or combination of cabs I own that could keep up with the M9 IMO.

Although, it would fun to take my M9 to a remote place with 2x810 cabs, turn on the M9 (dimed) run as FAR away as my wireless would allow and hit that open B string! Hahaha!

I pushed my master to 1 o'clock once (into an LDS 15/6) in a large hotel ballroom with 300 guests......and then had to turn it down. Mine gets warm but not hot at all.

He needs an M9, no doubt. After all, those WA's are just all about tubie break-up, warmth, an' goodness an' stuff...
I suppose I will start saying "get a fEARful" instead of "add a cab" once I get mine....

When I run just a single PH212 cab (@ 8 ohms) I have to turn it up to about 11:00 on the Master and yeah I'm sure it warms up a little, but I've never had it shut down or anything like that. I have to turn down bc even as nice as my Mesa cabs are, the M9 through just one of them could blow a driver pretty easily!

If you don't need the "juice" of the M9... IIRC there's a few M6's in the F/S-Amps section right now.

AND if you happen to be the kind of tweaker that likes to do stuff like combine voicings, which can only be done on the M6, since it's got separate jacks for each one on the back.

Have the reliability problems been worked out for M9 ? Also, I'm trying to get the skinny on what kinds of problems users had with the M9. I'm a possible buyer for such a bass head. I really want to own a M9 but I don't want to sign up for problems despite their 5 year warranty - few if any companies offer a warranty that long - kudos to Mesa Boogie. Do you have any tips for me as I shop for the M9 ?

1. Do a search.... there is lots of info on TB with regards to M9 issues/problems/solutions
2. Avoid (just IME) any M9 with a SN older than 500 that has not been sent in for required upgrades.
3. If they have been upgraded, ensure you ask for proof.
4. The new ones/upgraded ones seem rock solid.

I busted out my M9 manual regarding the Voice Defeat by using the front panel G-EQ controls:

The M9 includes a VOICE DEFEAT feature that works in conjunction with the Footswitch and allows you to automatically defeat the Front Panel VOICE modes when you engage the Graphic EQ via the Footswitch. The choices are VOICE ACTIVE (toggle up) and VOICE DEFEAT (toggle down).

So, looks like the V.D. option only works w/ the FS... Oh well. Maybe I can set it on top of my amp or something and just use a short TRS cable...
