Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I gave up Scout cabs some time ago. Great cabs if you like what they do; but they're not my flavor with electric. With double bass, for me, they're excellent though.

When I use my Walkabout now; I use LDS 12/6/1=12sub, or, most often, 2xBaerML112.

I still wish the Walkabout had twice the power. I'd use it way more.

don't lose the faith Chef, the boys in Petaluma keep making noises in private about a up-revved WA, say in the 800-900w range.

Such a small shop though compared to the bigger players, they can only do so many projects at once. And keep in mind they just dropped the very cool Strategy and Prodigy into the market. Bass gear, while very important to them, is not their biggest market segment. I think we just have to keep telling their reps here on TB that this matters a lot to us.

Yeah, if I felt comfortable spending the $$$ it would probably be Berg CN stuff. I wound-up with the Genz due to reading reported similarity (to CN and HS series) and a very fortunate/ridiculous low price. Having the CN212 for most gigs and and a CN112 rehearsals and quiet stuff would be ideal (with the ability to go 312).

Outside their sharp appearance and the sort-of convenient combo transport, unfortunately for me the Scout cabs have little to offer (given my approach and usual playing contexts).

Given their recent power downgrade of the M9, a 900 watt Walkabout suddenly seems like a little bit more of a leap than it did when they already had a viable/reliable 900 watt power section to build upon. Maybe they already plan to redesign the power section of the M9 though. Honestly now that I have a Prodigy my GAS for a more powerful WA has subsided drastically. Love the tone and features of the WA, but the Prodigy was really a home run for my needs and really does seem to give that little extra headroom that kept me from using the WA as my main squeeze ( despite being rated at 50 watts less at that!). The Prod is also about equivalent or maybe even a bit lighter than I'd imagine a headcased WA is.

All that said- if they did release a 900 watt Walkabout I'd almost certainly buy one!

My new three piece power-trio kinda band debuted this weekend.
I used the Walkabout and 2 Baer ML112's.
Guitar player has a Fender 100 watt 410 for his clean sound mixed with an Egnater 112 for his dirty tone. Drummer is a reasonable guy who doesn't beat the holy handcarts out of his kit.

The Walkabout was right on the edge of not enough. A little gritty all the time, definitely gnarly on double stops and chords. But, it fit the project well enough.
I used my 1972 DarkStar'd Tele, and Valenti 55 Precision 5 single coil.

I still wish the Walkabout twice the power.

I had my MBF500 there in case the Walkabout just wasn't enough, but I didn't use it...

A little gritty all the time is exactly how I like my Walkabout best- especially paired with some Darkstars or a P!

Yeah; it's nice, for some things.
I just "wish it was optional."

With twice the power, I could have enough output to stay clean when I wanted to, and, have that other tone...when I wanted to.

I hear that. The Walkabout definitely seems to sacrifice some clean headroom to the power section with that added driver tube. I think you oughtta check out a a Prodigy sometime!

I suppose the tricky part is, keeping the trademark Walkabout tone, while multiplying the power x2 or x3.

My ignorance is blissful for the moment, being that I don't have a gig where that much power is needed, but is that^^^ possible? I'm a headroom addict as much as the rest of you, so I'm all for a super-Walkabout should one become available.

I read a wide variety of opinions here about Walkabout vs. Carbine vs. Prodigy... and having never tried the latter two, I couldn't make an educated choice. For my (current) needs, it's 70% about tone and 30% power.

True Story:
That drummer and I have been in a band with a banjo player. I'm off screen stage right, and the the banjo player is fiddling, right there.

This is as close to proof as I can jangle out of the interwebz:

Btw, if anyone is interested, a 15" WA Scout combo with cover for $999 became available at GC

anyone ever pair a 12 and 15?

why yes, I have. It was a very good combination if your good to schlep 2 cabs. The Scout 15 handles the upper ranges of the WA power much better than the 12 combo cab is capable of. Together they can get the WA to deliver all the goodness that it can. You can also do some pretty nice stuff with the 2 adjustable crossovers. I ran the 12 on "sheen" (3k crossover ?) with its tweet slightly pushed, and I ran the 15 on Full with the tweet slightly rolled off. That worked best for me .. YMMV.

Ultimately I went with a Berg CN212 to get what I want out of my WA. I prefer a one cab haul and the Bergs sound magnificent with the WA (IMO/IME of course).

enjoy!

I'm using the Walkabout with a Bergantino HT112 and EX112...not sure exactly how similar to the CN212 that combination is, but it sounds fantastic.
