Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

thanks for the reply. so is there a problem with the amp or is this a common issue? just wanted to be certain that it won't become a major problem over time. by the way they are both plugged into the same power strip.

That is not a common problem, and you should get it figured out.

Dad gummit ! My first headroom situation last show. Bad judgement not to run a little front of house. It's a big bar.

In retrospect, the fact that I had just one HD212, still awesome.

If it's possible, bring an extra 12. IME, Walkabout>>>12>12>12=:hyper:! One of my favorite rigs ever was a Walkabout on top of a GB Neox 112/212 stack at 2.7 Ohms.
That extra cone area made the difference between being enough, and having clean headroom to spare. Personally, however, I was not willing to shlep the 3rd 12. YMMV.

I've been thinking about doing the SilentX fan mod I've heard mentioned a few times to my WA. Does anyone have a link/part number for the fan? Also, is it a plug and play deal? Thanks fellas.

I used SilenX EFX-08-15. Original was hardwired so I bought an additional PC Fan extension cable and soldered the female end to the wiring from the amp so if I ever need to replace again it will be plug and play.

I just got my WA back from the shop. I have had it for about 10 years and gigged it hard and finally one night it blew.

I thought it was a goner and let it sit for a while but I finally started messing with it and found that it would make sound but it was very distorted.

I replaced the tubes but that didn't help so I took it to a tech.

Apparently one of the fuses was blown and there was no voltage on the negative rail so it was only running half power. The tech was amazed that it even made any sound at all. He had never seen one before and was very complementary of the build quality.

So my tough little amp is back in action. I plugged it in and it sounds so sweet. Can't wait to gig with it again. I'm going to try it back in the 12 combo and run a Glasstone Lil G as an extension cab.

You guys and the fan mods....
I mean, do what you want, but I've had 6 or so Walkabouts, and I never heard the fan in a venue.
I did a lot of quiet, small room, double bass gigs with a Scout 12, and it never bothered me, or crowd, or sound guys.
ymmv tho.

Yup, mine does not have that mod either and once you're playing LOUD, you never hear it.

I've never heard the fan in a venue either however I found it to be much easier to replace the fan than to leave my quiet home and go to a venue each time I want to relax and play bass for a while. I feel certain that no one would go through the trouble to replace their fan if they weren't bothered by it. I frequently leave my amp on and put the bass down while I do something else for a bit and in these idle times I can hear the fan humming along behind me.

Question about the Scout 12 cabs - if you turn the tweeter control on the back all the way counterclockwise, does it turn the tweeter completely off? It seems to have for me, but I want to be sure.
I play my WA through two Scout 12 cabs and my signal has VERY high gain and a lot of overdrive, and it was making the tweeter "flutter"; after turning both to the left, the sound is much better. Plus, I replaced the 4-ohm speakers with 8-ohm Deltalites, and the sound is amazing without the amp getting really hot. All good!

I used to run that same rig... and I swear somebody on here gave me that same advice once, regarding the tweeter. At least a year ago.

Happy new member of the Walkabout club!

Bought this Walkabout 12 and extension cab from fellow TB'r a few months ago. There was a bit of farting when used without the extension cab, so a speaker guru I know set me up with a better 12 that really improved it. I am not allowed to tell anyone what the speaker is, that is the deal I made, so I'm not being a jerk, just keeping my word. I absolutely love this amp, and have no wants for anything else.

so... out of interest what is the old speaker you took out? I've heard some folk say it's a mesa branded Eminence 2012?

I'm not even sure that it is "Mesa branded". I recently replaced the 15" speakers in my combo and ext cab with 8ohm speakers purchased directly from Mesa. They look identical to Deltalite II, even shipping from Mesa in the Eminence boxes. Anyway, I purchased direct from Mesa as they were cheaper than most other Eminence dealers.
