I've been following this thread too. Wow! Eighteen pages so far, and still going strong!

I was at first angered at the treatment you received, Alex, then amazed at the way this community rallied to right this wrong. It makes me proud to be a part of it, we have something rare here.

Being relatively new to TB and even newer to LC, I was not familiar with Mike. It looks like this guys life and priority's changed and he has moved on from lutherie. Too bad he didn't have the stones to just man up and say, "look, I can't do this for you" and give you your money back. Sometimes peoples egos are just too big to allow them to admit to mistakes. Sorry you got caught up in that.

It looks like you are going to get your bass after all, thanks to all of the wonderful people here donating their time and materials. As someone observed in a previous post, that bass is going to have a lot of love in it. It's going to be a beautiful bass that you will enjoy for years to come. Can't wait to see the build thread.

I thought about suggesting this, but the thought of the bad guy keeping the original down payment bothered me because I don't think he cares.

Thanks man, I can't allow myself to be responsible for that though, I would think Alex would be best to do this, as he is pretty much the main go between on this right now, I am just letting everyong figure out what they want to do right now, since this started it has started changing greatly from the original concept, so I have no idea what is going on now.

Thank you all for the support. It is overwhelming!

I told Mike that if he gave me the neck blank and hardware, I would walk away from the deal.

I just received an email from him agreeing to my proposal.

It's hardly a great deal ($1500 for a couple of hundred dollars in parts), but it was a compromise I was forced to make.

Let's hope it doesn't take two years for him to give the parts to a fellow tber...

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you might want to have the neck blank checked carefully. If I remember right, the design used some cocobolo in the neck (if that's wrong, please disregard my post). I remember seeing Mike post a while back in a different thread that he had a "production failure" with some cocobolo he was working with. I hope it wasn't you neck blank...

Oh my god. So sorry that this has happened to you.

After reading a lot of the emails and the FB chat you posted, I have come to the conclusion that I would rather peel my skin off and roll in salt than ever have a transaction with this guy.

Seems like a pure scumbag from top to bottom - from the dishonesty, to the sickeningly smug way he talks to you.

The OP is a better man than I am....BUT I think it is safe to say that by Mike not commenting in this thread and obviously not taking care of the problem....AND not caring about the situation....he probably will never build a custom bass for anyone on TB again...and if the random person that wants a custom bass googles his name, then his lack of communication and encoded questions might have just cost him his 'hobby' as this thread will surely pop up.

A couple of notes to this comment.

1) I think it's a good idea to check out the builder before you place an order. TB is a great resource for this and you can find reviews and comments on other's experiences with various builders. A bit of due dilligence here can save a lot of headaches down the road.

2) As an owner of a custom bass from one of the builders on this site, I can definitely say it's an experience not to be missed! My hand-built bass is absolutely beyond anything else I've ever played. And I had awesome customer support for a bass that I bought used.

Things change quick in this info age. I Googled 'Mikeyswood' a few pages back in this thread, and he didn't appear at all in the first page of results. No one knew who Oswald was either until, well, you know.

I'm sorry you had to endure this rigamarole, but as long as he at the very least makes good at this most recent agreement, maybe you'll have something to show for your trouble, and hopefully a viable neckblank to turn into something awesome.

I wish you the best. Agreed, the support in this thread is truly awesome.

Various people starting tossing around the idea of somehow communally building a bass for Alex out of the neck blank and other materials and it's started snowballing. There are offers of construction help, pickups, electronics and stuff coming together and it appears Musiclogic is keeping track of who can contribute what (I think). Alex wrote that he sought Mike's agreement to hand over the blank and other components and call it a deal, and Mike agreed, so it's been rolling a bit more. It's developed slowly in the last few days and is an interesting read...

Yes, based on Mike actually providing the neck blank, we have put together a conglomeration of builders from Washington State to Sweden to get this done finishing and being set up in Austrailia. A lot of great guys are contributing wood, pickups, bridge, knobs, top, tuners, and it looks like I'll do most of the general whittling...LOL Everyone has worked quickly at resolving and getting this going, we will have a thread about this here, and the goal date to ship to Australia for Phil to put the finishing touches on. Which will be right before Easter. This allows us to get the work done, and still meet the obligations we already have. Hopefully Alex will receive a true representation of the bass he originally commissioned from Mike.

That's as up to date as it gets at this point.....stay tuned....LOL :D
