First, he's an idiot for not cutting it with the taper halfway along the length, so both pieces are usable.

I guess a heel block will be the only option, or a thinner heel block and then pretty a top (i mean back) on it..

Well, no actually. As you can see in the pic, he cuts so that one end has a much longer thick section before the taper (where the wings would attach). So you do end up with two blanks, but only one has a long enough thick section to build the design I wanted.

Now can anyone guess which one Mike gave up?

Yep, the one with only 8 or so inches to attach the wings. The one that is of no use to my build.

Hopefully one of the men from the League of Extraordinary Luthiers (all these fine men that are helping me out) can use it for one of their builds, but for mine? NOPE!

No, what I am planning is to remove a 3/8" layer from the back and plane the blank flat in that area, layer in woods in a similar pattern to the body wings and neck blank, then cap th back with the removed slab to keep the look Alex wanted, and stay with the idea of the lams making for an interesting sculpted heel when complete. There are many ways to build an area like this to extend an angled area, Something I have done for another builder who made a similar mistake.

The neck blank has arrived at JC's (thank you Andy, my man - I owe you a beer) and it is totally useless. Possibly usable for a bolt on JC reckons.

So for $1500 I ended up with $100 worth of Hipshot stuff and a used Chinese pickup.

Cincinnati folks, I may be PMing you shortly to make some arrangements.

There's no way around it, you were screwed. If you're going to do something about it, do it. Or forget it...

If it was me, I wouldn't want anything this guy ever touched on my custom bass. That's some serious bad blood. I'd take the 1500 bucks as a loss or as a crash course of "how not to trust anyone on the other side of the planet" and be done with it. Make a fire with the wood, donate the pickup to some kid...

Or just buy a Squier...

I am, and I'd let it go, but JC and the guys are working on something really cool, and that blank was to be used. This was just a further blow. Oh well, he can't sting me again, at least!

I can't understand why somebody would do such a thing... say he got "tired" or for whatever reason got really delayed on the build... whatever... now this episode with the neck balnk leaves no place for mistake regarding the guys character...

I don't want him to take this comment badly, but I'm sorry for steps also... I wish he did post any feedback he got from mikey... how could he explain this to any of his costumers!??!
