[Minneapolis/MN Thread] Midwestern Comradarie

I have a question. I'm making some cabs because I've got speakers to use up. For the purposes of this discussion, two 4 ohm Eden cast frame 12's and two Eminence Alpha 6A's. I don't really need the cabs, but it'll be a learning experience and I figure I'll have an easier time getting rid of them if they're in cabs. I figure each 12 is capable of handling 250 watts or more program, but not crazy fEarful wattages.

I've got three options in mind:

1) two four ohm 12+6 cabs.

2) two four ohm 12+6 wedges - real bass cabs for monitoring purposes, leave one by your drummer perhaps.

3) one eight ohm 1212+6 cab (a good 500 watt cab).

If you were shopping for a cab, which would be of most interest to you?

While I'm on a Wallets kick, this one gives a reasonable idea of what they were like live:

I've had a single 112 cab, two 112's stacked and a couple different 212 cabs. I much prefer the 212 layout. The first one was an Ampeg Portabass neo 212. It was a great cab, but I sold it when I moved to my GK MB212 combo (the combo is the same weight as just the Ampeg cab was with no amp). These are both great due to the light weight and a somewhat rare form factor; both cabs are much taller than wide. Most 212's that I've seen are square boxes with the speakers mounted diagonally. The Ampeg speakers were vertically stacked while the GK are slightly diagonal.

It probably doesn't make much difference, but one thought is that maybe the sound is easier to hear being a little closer to my ear than the shorter square cabs. More importantly, they're easier to handle and fit in the car than the square cabs and I think they look better: more like a small 810. I just like that proportion better than the squares.

My Genz Benz NeoX has the same form factor (vertically aligned). The diagonal form factor is a convenience for the manufacturer: Then can use essentially the same box for their 4x10, 1x15 and 2x12 cabs, with just porting differences. It helps the consumer if they're going to stack boxes of different configurations.

I like the rack width cabs because they're easier to get in and out of doorways in addition to the other advantages touted here.

For this project, I'm leaning toward two 1x12's because I can get rid of one and keep one if I'd like. I can always hook up a series cable to run them both at an eight ohm load. There's no reason I need to keep one though - I've got too much gear and my NeoX serves me well.

When I bought NeoX 2x12 I did it because it was around 25% cheaper to do one 2x12 than two 1x12's. I also figured that if I had a gig where I was bringing a 1x12 I'd always grab the second "just in case". Thirdly, one bigger box with kick back wheels is one trip in and out whereas two 1x12's is two trips in and out.

I keep envisioning an Olympic event where you have to carry your rig through a mile of downtown (stairs, etc.), set up and play the (rock) gig. My rig (Shuttle 6.0 head fits in my bass gig bag) would do well for that. Two trips or too small a rig would mean defeat.

I suppose I'm talking myself into the 2x12 if I'm getting rid of the cab immediately. I can use a single four ohm 1x12 more than I can another 2x12.

Thanks guys. This side discussion is helping me clarify my thoughts.

Do you have any idea how the efficiency of the two speakers compares?

I know the Alpha6 is around 99-100db at 1w/m so you will need either some power driving the 12s or perhaps pad the 6 back some to get a level response.

Good luck with the build, look forward to seeing the results.

For the 12+6 idea, I figured that since the woofer was four ohm and the mid was an eight ohm it would help balance them out. First iteration of the crossover would be a first order Butterworth crossover - one capacitor, one coil at somewhere between 500 and 800 Hz. The gentle 6 dB/octave slopes would smooth the transition from woofer to mid. Lastly, I like mids if they aren't in the total garbage range, which suggests I'd be better off with the 800 Hz crossover frequency. Between the sealed enclosure and the fairly high crossover frequency, the Alpha 6A should be safe.

All I know of the Eden woofers is the size of the box and the ports that it came in. The cab was a 2 ohm cab, which I didn't realize until after I nearly burned up my amp. It was made by Eden as a one-off for an employee. It was 1" thick particle board. HEAVY. So I pulled the hardware and the speakers and pitched the cabinet. I've been using an Eminence Delta 12 LF in WinISD for modeling purposes but keeping the cab at the same volume and tuning that the cabinet the woofers came in used.

The first order Butterworth crossover was chosen because it's cheap, easy and suffers no phase shift effects. I figure that if the crossover is not good enough I've got very little invested in it and I can afford to get something more complicated in there ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]*). But I want to hear what it sounds like.

*I'd actually have to do the 2x12 + 6 to use that crossover, to get the impedances right for it.

I've got a Peavey DPM C8 weighted keyboard (88 keys) controller that suddenly stopped working. I never used it and I'm also giving it away. PM me if you'd like to take it off my hands. I've got some documentation on PDF, manual, schematic or both. I can dig them up. Peavey's pretty good about keeping documentation on line.

For those who are Peavey USA fans locally, there is a newly listed Peavey Dyna Unity at the MusicGoRound in Maple Grove for $199.

I don't know what shape or what flavor it is, but that's a pretty good price and worth a look if you are so inclined and not east-Jesus the other side of the cities from there (like me)...
