I try (not always successfully) to give the umps the benefit of the doubt. Bad calls happen, especially with balls and strikes. However, some are worse than others. Angel Hernandez has been horrible. Last night was the worst I've seen. Seven innings of consistency, then it was like he couldn't see in the last 2 innings. On top of that, he confronts players who show frustration, baiting them into arguing.

At the MLB level, all I ask for is consistency. If a pitch 2 inches off the plate is called a strike all game long, I have no problem with it being called a strike in the 9th. If one call gets blown (and I mean blown, not borderline), that happens. But when one pitch gets called a strike and a better one gets called a strike in several at bats over 2 innings, that gets frustrating.

If a player consistently performs that poorly, he doesn't stay in the big leagues for that long. Umpires don't seem to have the same accountability.

I have to keep hope for the season. Mariners are dropping like flies, but they still pulled out a 1-0 win last night. oooooWEEEEE! But, they have won five in a row and are STILL two games back of the Astros. Dammit! At least they aren't in the AL East, where they would be in third and pretty much buried even though they are playing .600 ball.

I was surprised the Phillies blanked the Braves last night with the way Arrieta has been pitching of late. He managed 7 SO in just over six innings so that was a welcome sight.

There, now I have the baseball gods gaze on my cheering interest instead of yours :)

Cubs scored a total of one run in their two games against Cleveland, losing 10-1 and 1-0. Yuck. Still, they're only 4 games out of first. Next up: Hosting SF tomorrow.

This thread is a demonstration of the power of baseball. We all know that we are going to be disappointed in the end. Especially me as a Mariners fan. But that doesn't mean we can't hold out hope and enjoy the ride right to the bitter end. Except that the Mariners will win the World Series this year. I just know it! If they can somehow find a team that isn't almost all on the DL by the end of the season.

Umpires are subject to objective grading of their performance. Just like players, they have to work their way up through the minors. What you see are the best there is.

Remember, a successful hitter makes an out 70% of the time, and the league batting average this year is .244. There are All Stars who strike out 1/3 of their at bats.

Rockies have a nine-game home stand starting with the Cincy Reds, who are in the deep-darks. The Rox haven't hit well at home, and this is their chance to break out. They lead the NL West by 1/2 game, and I'd like to see them win at least 5 out of the 9 at home...6 or 7 would be better. It's time for them to find that home field advantage, which has been missing up til now.

The Braves avoided the sweep up in Bahstin this morning.
(West Coast time is really, Really weird. Today’s game started at 10:15 AM...)

Ordinarily, ya score 6 runs...(that was last night)
They lost 8-6.

Scored 7 runs today...more than enough.

It’s on to play the New Yorks...at 10:00 tomorrow morn! :thumbsup:
