Modulus Mob

The next bass I get will probably be a Modulus VJ4.
Just wondering which pickups sound the best and wether to go full passive, or go passive pickups and the preamp option.
Thoughts?
Does anyone have any sound clips or links?

No sound clips, but I tried to live with the passive Bart setup for a couple of days, pretty weak and just didn't do it for me. So I put in a J-Retro and Delano Single coils.

Here are a few clips of my VJ with barts and the active 2 band.
Not great clips, but a piece of the picture for these great basses.

Just screwing around at practice, but you can see how it sits w guitar and drums. Using a DB750 and BagEnd S15X-D cab.

They are great basses no matter the pickups.

I have heard various recordings and youtube clips of both systems and the tone is great on both, though as you have read above, some say the all pasive setup seems low output, but I guess if you're comparing side by side, then the preamp with whatever pickups used will seem louder.
I will check out those sound clips tonight. Thanks!

I had time to listen to both sound clips tonight.
Nice playing. The bass sounds very clear and deep with a growly bottom. Good stuff!

Hey Y'all, I want to post something positive regarding Modulus' customer service.

Recently my stacked treble pot fell off my Q5 and was misplaced. I sent an email to Modulus CS and received a prompt reply from Joe Perman telling me to order the replacement part through All Parts and even included the link to guide me directly to the knobs section that Modulus uses on the Quantums (http://www.allparts.com/Black-Stacked-Knobs-p/mk-3320-003.htm). Great service. I, for one, have bashed them in the past for poor customer service (or no service or reply at all) and want to give them praise when they go above and beyond.
I emailed Joe back to thank him for his great service.

New workshop, facebook page, updated website- makes me happy:bassist:

I have had good customer service from Modulus during the 6 month wait for my TBX. A reply can take a little time, but they are a small outfit and are quite busy. Joe is very passionate about the basses he builds. He even sent through photos via Tony from Planet Bass
of various hand selected tops for me to choose from. I emailed Joe to thank him after I got the bass to say thanks and he got back to me with a great reply. I have only had good experiences with Modulus customer service.

I had great customer experience w Anderson at Modulus as well. When I got my fretless Genesis the truss rod had beef snapped and thus the bass was passed along a few times. I sent it to Anderson and they completely redid the neck w a new fretboard and rod. I was quoted 12 weeks and I got it back a couple weeks early. Great service the whole time.

Hello fellow mobsters. It's been awhile, but I just wanted to check in and let you guys know that I'll be getting my "second" Q5 this Wednesday. Why is the word second in quotations, you ask? There must be a story...

I received my first Q5, which I had ordered with a number of custom options, back in June (see photos posted earlier in this thread). When it arrived, I noticed that the neck unfortunately hadn't been fretted to my specs: I ordered a 34" scale / 26 fret neck, and the bass arrived with 24 frets. I contacted Modulus, who were very apologetic and immediately began construction on a replacement neck (actually the third one built for my bass, which is a story for another day...).

Meanwhile, as I got to know the bass, I realized that my eye was constantly distracted by a single dark knot in the chechen top. The rest of the wood's grain was amazing, with layers of intricate detail throughout. Because I had waited several years to be able to design my dream bass, I wanted it to be perfect. After much thought, I decided to have a second body built - this time topped with a piece of hand-selected AAAA figured walnut.

The wait has been almost unbearable. Construction began on the new body after I had already sent the original Q5 back to the shop for the neck swap, and has taken an additional 10 weeks from start to finish. Now paired with the new 34" scale 26 fret neck, I feel that the finished product constitutes a whole new instrument, as only my pickups, preamp, and hardware remain from the original (EMG DC40's and an EMG 3-Band EQ).

Through it all, Anderson and the guys at Modulus have been amazing to work with on this instrument over the last several months. As many of you know, they have a very small operation, and the level of attention that they have provided to ensure that my bass is "just right" has been unbelievable. In my opinion, Modulus is truly second to none in the world of bass guitar.

I hear you Roscoe, it WAS a beautiful top... I absolutely loved 99% of it. Here's a cropped and lightened photo that shows the knot a bit better (sorry for the lack of sharpness):

Note how dark it is compared to the rest of the top. That, coupled with the extremely light ring around the outside of it was enough for me to start from scratch. Crazy I know, but I'm extremely picky... and I'm optimistic that the new body (along with the 34"/26 neck) will be worth the wait.

She arrived from Richmond safe and sound (and perfectly in tune): 2012 Modulus Q5 - Hand Selected Figured Walnut Top, Alder Body, 34" Scale 26 Fret Neck, Phenolic Fingerboard, EMG DC40 Pickups, and EMG 3-Band EQ.
