Modulus Mob

Beautiful bass, Derrick. I too have been reading the Modulus Drama all morning (I have a Q5), and would be really bummed if they closed shop.

I scratch my head about their "business model"....

Good Luck!

Thanks Bip. I'd be bummed. My all time fav 4 string is still my VJ. I hope it works out for them. I know a lot of smaller business are struggling. Hopefully they make it. I sold off my Quantums because I preferred wider spacing. They were amazing basses though.

Putting out some good vibes to all the people waiting on repairs and orders. Also to the modulus folks.

OK mob. I am looking at a acquiring a 93 Q6 that has an electronic setup I don't quite understand. The instrument is remote and the seller is not well informed. What I know is that it has 2 Barts, 4 knobs (presumably Vol, Blend, Bass, Treble), and a single 9 volt in the cavity. What puzzles me are the two toggle switches outfitted above the knobs. Would these be stock to a bass from this era? Are they coil taps offering single/dual coil operation of each pickup?
Any info appreciated.

They could easily be stock and my guess is either coil switching or perhaps a mid range frequency selector switch. I would suggest that electronics are not a deal maker or breaker. I often swap them out on a regular basis to see what works best with that particular bass.

Looked through the thread and was wondering if anyone has upgraded to Nordstrand dual coil pickups or something similar. I have a 91 Q5 I bought brand new and think after 22 years it's time to change up the sound. It has EMGs with the 2 band EQ. The highs are a little brittle but cut through great in rock situations. I have other basses I'm using for my current bands so would like to change this one up. If I missed this upgrade on the thread please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I'm waiting on a pair of SGD neos for my Q6 TBX.

Wow those sound pretty good. Thanks Edwin!

I hope so. They have a good reputation, although David also has a reputation of taking a long time!
As long as it doesn't take as long as it did to get my Bartolini triple coils for my Starfire, I'm cool. That was 18 months, with the last 14 of them telling me that the pickups were on the shipping table waiting to be boxed up. Of course, I've been waiting to get my Lane Poors for 12 years now!

I was on a constant search with my 92 Q5 that I bought new as well (and is still the bass I use for 75% of my gigs). It came with barts/bart pre.

First I put in a Demeter pre and took out the bart, then sent it to Rodger and had a Sadowsky pre installed. Later bought a pair of Sadowsky soaps and installed those, kept the Sadowsky pre/pickups for a few years. Was then looking for something different (It was just too scooped sounding, even in passive mode with the passive tone control), so bought an East and installed and took out Sadowsky (many of these things bought here on TB). Finally about a year or two ago bought a brand new set of EMGs and EMG pre and had that installed, and am once again happy.

I have a Q6 I traded for here on TB that came with EMGs pickups/pre and now with my Q5 set up similar I find it to be the best sounding match for the Modulus basses

Just heard through the grapevine that modulus has stopped production. Customer support has even really bad for a few months. No one answers the phone, no email response, no new basses being shipped to stores, low inventory,etc..

Anyone know if this is true?

There's a thread about this. From what I understand, they are going through a reorganization but will not be going out of business. Not answering phones or responding to emails is apparently not totally out of the ordinary for them. I wouldn't waste too much time speculation until something more definitive comes from the company themselves.

That sounds like a reasonable assessment of the situation, I placed an order through Bass Central for a Q5 in December.....34" Scale w/ Chechen Top and fingerboard, satin finish on the body and back of neck as well. It would be a major drag if that was not happening.

Any fello Mobsters use a gig bag for their Modulus basses? I have a Momo M80 that I use with other basses, but looking for something a little easier on the wallet. I used to have a Protec Contego just don't know if it will fit. My 24 fret, 35" scale Lull would NOT fit the Protec, so I am not sure if the Q5 will fit and I don't have it with me to measure it.

I've got a '93 Q6 TBX with this set up. It's got Bartolini quad coils; the two toggle switches - each has three positions - are for selecting coil configurations.

1 - P style offset humbucker - B-E-A neck coil, D-G-C bridge coil
2 - Full humbucker - all 4 coils engaged
3 - Reverse P style offset humbucker - B-E-A bridge coil, D-G-C neck coil

Knobs are as you guessed, volume, balance, bass, treble.

FWIW. my VJ is taller/longer than my Q5.
