Modulus Mob

IIRC, it's a custom setup with the MTD Bart electronics. I think he discussed it a few pages back, or at least on this thread somewhere.

It's pretty awesome. :)

I'm so sorry for not answering you guys sooner. I'm playing with 3 bands and it takes up a lot of my time. I know I should condense down to one band and concentrate but $ calls.
From left they are:

MTD 635 #574 signed by Michael Tobias. That dude is a phenominal luthier. I visited him for a whole day and I watched him work and I'm lucky to be able to call him a friend.

Modulus Quantum 5- my first Modulus with EMGs, black as night, gold h/w and loud!

'65 Fender Jazz- black with tort guard, original passive pups

Modulus Quantum 6- my main bass, I had Michael Tobias' latest design of Bartolini guts put in that he puts in all his basses. He told me you can't buy them from the Bartolini shop. This Q6 sings like a bird and growls like a dragon. I'm going to get another Q6 some day hopefully($$$) but this Q6 will always be my baby. It has an alder body with a spalted maple top and a slice of mahogany in between those. The neck is Modulus graphite with a phenolic f/b.
Thanks for asking.

I had my Q5 modified last week by my local guy (for the past 20 years!) Mike Lull of Bellevue WA.
I was not satisfied with the tone I was getting from the Bartolini / bart 3-band system. The type of voice I had always imagined was not there - and every time I played it I was constantly adjusting every possible knob, switch, and parameter - and still frustrated by a muffled darkness. With the treble knob dimed, it had a harsh high sizzle, but almost a void below that until the HUGE low mids and bass.

Mike identified the problems immediately. He replaced the 25k Volume pot with a 500k (pull-out passive switch as well), replaced the 250k Blend pot with a 500k, and installed the Bartolini 3-position switch that gives Mid control center frequencies of 250Hz / 500Hz / 800Hz. And he completed the shielding - with bonding inside the control cavity, and inside the pickups themselves. He also at my request replaced the stock stacked Treble/Bass knob (ugly) with one that has a top knob that matches the others (see a Roscoe for ex).

I got it back and it is a whole new bass - the sound is opened up, the full midrange voice now sings with the thundering lows, and the controls are not so "quick" to overpump the Mids and Bass - better control, better tone, and more flexible sounding.
I highly recommend these changes for any Modulus w/Barts owner. Mine now speaks with the "Voice of God" as I had long dreamed it would. I am rattling my house into submission lately!

Oh, ok.....let's talk options.

Right now I have the active EMG p/u in it....so maybe go to Bart's? What else can I do to pimp it out...

What's your preamp? My 94 has the Bart/Bart setup, and sounds wonderful.

On my old Q5 fretless, I had EMGs w/ an Aggy 3-band EQ and it sang for days. I prefer the EMGs on the fretless & Barts on the fretted.

My new one will have Barts w/ the Aggy & 18V setup, 3-way coil tap, 400/800 mid freq switch, pull/push active/passive so I'm interested to see how the electronics turn out.

I've been a fan of coil taps/switches since I had my Dingwall. :)

I actually have no idea what my preamp is....the only time I see it is when I change my batteries out...haha. I wish I could find a spec sheet and an advertisement with my mod in it...b/c I will have it forever.

I would love to have a push/pull on my bass...not even sure if I could make that happen. I know nothing about modding instruments...I am just now getting into it....so hopefully my brain wheels will keep turning.

Contact Tony @ Planet Bass, as he's the guy I'm getting mine through. He's doing the few touch ups on my bass Modulus Guitars wouldn't do. He's a cool cat.
