Hey Mob, does the finish on the neck of this bass look like something to stay away from? I've been gassing for a Mod for years now, and the price is right, but the finish looks kind of like it's lifting from the graphite or something. Any experience with this issue?

Believe it or not that's pretty common with some older moddys. The polyurethane coating can fog up like that because over time moisture can get in between the graphite and the poly. It doesn't generally effect the feel or sound or stability. It's pretty much only cosmetic. So at that price, if everything else is sound with the bass, it's easy definitely go for it! That's the best deal you'll ever find on a q4.

Thanks Ballin! I'm a college student, so this would still be a big investment, but I'm definitely going to try and see what I can pull together. I'll be sure to post here if I am able to snap it up!

Some quick questions for the Mob: I have access to a Modulus 4-string neck and am thinking about picking it up and putting a little project bass together. Before I buy...

1. Are Modulus P and J style necks the same?
2. If no to #1, how do they differ?
3. If no to #1, would I still be able to use it on either a P or a J style body provided I like the feel of the neck?

I only have experience with Quantum necks, so I could definitely stand to benefit from any guidance you guys can provide. Thanks in advance!

Presuming you're talking about the BassStar-labeled necks ... I'm a bit fuzzy on whether (or when) they made a P/J distinction so can't confidently answer #1 or 2, but re: #3 yes, all of the BassStar necks conformed to the standard Fender neck heel dimensions so would fit either a P or J body.

Hi Bob - I'm actually referring to the newer style necks. This is the one in question:

Modulus never made precision style necks that I know of, so you will never have to worry about questions #1 or #2. To answer question #3: That is a jazz neck. It will work with any standard fender-style neck pocket (with 34" scale). Does not matter whether the body is jazz or precision or any other 34" scale fender-style body. Jazz necks are slim (1.5" at the nut) and "fast" feeling, whereas precision necks are thicker (usually at least ~1.7" nut) and chunkier feeling.

Your question was phrased kind of poorly because P necks and J necks are inherently different in shape and spec so it wouldn't make any sense if they were "the same". They will both fit the same neck pocket and are the same scale length, though. There are many people that put jazz necks on precision Bodies, and vice versa, to get a certain sound/feel combo. Find yourself a fender style body and you should be good to go.

Okay, that's what they called their "Quantum" neck -- which is weird because it never appeared on any of their Quantum basses! -- but yes, both the P & J versions of those necks will fit a standard Fender body, the heel dims are identical.

what p.u./preamp combo works best for you or sounds/performed beyond your expectations?

After going through two sets of electronics in my Modulus -- the stock Modulus circuit, and then an EMG BTC -- I was all set to get rid of the original EMG J-type pickups...and then I tried an ACG/East EQ-02 filter-based preamp. Holy crap! I definitely was not expecting this bass to grow the set of balls it developed instantaneously with the upgrade to these new electronics.
