Modulus Mob

would like to hear opinions on pickup/preamp combos on your respective moduli (or any bass in general).

about to start two projects and am looking to shake thing up a bit in the electronics department.

what p.u./preamp combo works best for you or sounds/performed beyond your expectations?
I have aguilar soaps and an aguilar pre in my modulus and it produces a really rich midrange tone

My vj4 has nordstrand split coils and John East u-retro deluxe preamp. I honestly thing it's the most ballsy sounding jazz bass I've EVER heard. Super punchy, clear, raw sound from the nordy pickups, very organic. Obviously the John east is incredible for active jazz basses, Marcus Miller uses one, and they are highly renowned for the quality of their sound performance and components. They are also the most versatile and tweakable preamp I've ever used, some people aren't into lots of knobs and switches though. I personally really recommend this pu/pre combo in any jazz bass. Breath-taking.

However, I've tried nordstrand big splits (basically an over wound version of a split single coil) on my quantums and they were too harsh.

They made both P and J style necks main difference is just the shape of the headstock look at the last page of the catalog here https://web.archive.org/web/20030317041836/http://www.modulusguitars.com/Modulus 2002 price list3.pdf

The difference in the picture is not between P and J necks, but between the all-graphite necks and the wood-and-graphite Genesis necks.

With both the old Bassstar and the newer necks, the difference between P and J necks is the same as it is with every other Fender-style neck: the P is wider at the nut than the J.

The plot thickens:

I've done a bit more investigation into the neck mentioned on the previous page, and to me at appears to actually be a Funk Unlimited / Persuasion neck, as it has 22 frets instead of 21. The seller claims that it'll fit a standard Fender P/J pocket, but I'm concerned that the additional fret/neck length would cause intonation issues on a traditional Fender body. Do you guys have any thoughts on this one way or the other?

Are the extra frets on an overhang? My 21 fret VJ necks have overhangs.

Probably came off a vertex which would be the same or similar to Funk Unlimited / Persuasion neck. More up to date sizes/measurements in the last modulus catalog

I honestly think quantums are just designed with dual coils in mind.

What kind of "projects" are you doing here, @pnutz?
Project #1:

i tend to keep these on the d.l. since most purists feel that the graphite neck makes a modulus a modulus. and that replacing the neck is sacrilegious. but i prefer these necks. the one on the left ("River") has a gould maple neck. the one on the right ("Sabina") has a neck based on the gould neck but a little skinnier at the nut. what i also have done is have the bridge butted up against the edge of the body and the neck set a bit further in. it makes it easier for me to play since my fretting hand isn't venturing farther from my body and opening up my shoulder (bad shoulders).

so project #1 ("Cassie") is going to be another coco-topped moddy body with the same neck build as Sabina. But looking at different electronics. initial plan was to install nordys into a glock pre.

Project #2:

earlier in this thread, i posted a pic of my peavey b-quad. the body is gone but have the moddy graphite neck and want to marry it to a custom body based on a quantum q5. again, same dilemma with project #1 in deciding what road to take in regards to electronics. body will be alder with a flame top or maybe coco.

Well I'm definitely surprised that you'd remove the graphite from a moddy but I hardly think it's sacrilegious just weird lol. But they make very nice bodies as well so I see why someone might wana use one for a project.

I think you are going the right route with the nordy/glockenklang combo. Dual coils for the graphite neck for sure would be my choice. The wood neck, you could probably do anything. What kind of tone do you generally like from your basses? That might help me come up with some more appropriate suggestions.

UPDATE!

I will be selling my fretless vj4, as well as one of my Q4's (haven't decided which one yet) and probably my ebmm sterling, as well as some other odds and ends. Keep your eye on the classifieds in the next couple weeks. Or pm me early to get first dibs on something.

the modulus bodies balance and 'sit' perfectly against me which is why i prefer them. most comfortable in my book.

in regards to p.u./pre combos, looking for a more transparent, un-colored tone. used emg's and barts since day one and just hunting to see what else might be available.

Oh I see. You might want to check out delano, they are supposed to be some of the cleanest pickups around. James Reed are also really good for clarity and transparency, but he can be really crappy about customer service or responding in a timely fashion. But they are top notch boutique pickups.

Nordy, other than those two. All I can think of right now.

did some digging on delano's. very intrigued.

leaning towards delano's into a glock pre for project #1. can swap 'em out if they don't work for me.

if i go with a maple top on alder on project #2, might need more 'oomph' from the p.u./pre. i have barts into an aggie obp-1 in 'Sabina' and that setup has some boom to it. might go barts into an obp-3. again, if me no likey, just swap 'em out.

wish i had access to a set of lane poor's. they're supposed to be the bee's knees. and modulus thought well enough of them to offer them at the factory. maybe will happen upon a set one day.

Supposedly you can order some of the new lane poor legacy pickups from planetbass currently. With the modulus snowflake hologram. But planetbass seems the only channel through which you can actually get ahold of them.
