are lane poor's passive? if so, you should be able to use a 250k pot for your volume knob.

i'm about to rewire an obp-1 for emg's and, since emg's are active pickups, needed to pick up 25k pots to match the pre to the pickups.

to be sure, maybe either drop a line to aguilar or even the cats at bbg to get their opinions.

you can use 25k pots on active pickups and 250k on passive.

you might want to double-check tho on the makeup of the lane poor.

did a quick search and it seems the posts i've seen mention that l.p.'s are passive.

maybe check with joe over at the modulus site (or f.b. page) since they're using l.p.'s on some of their new builds.

If you have the pickup AND the Preamp coming together, it doesn't matter what the Fleabass has, since you'll likely be using the volume pot that came with the OPB-1. If it's a standard 250k you'll be all good.

No, LP pickups are NOT active. They are typically low-output passive pickups that generally should be paired with preamps. If they were active, you wouldn't need a preamp to get proper volume out of them (which you do). The only thing active about your electronics setup is the preamp, unless I'm missing something. And you don't really need active pickups if you have an active preamp, though you can do both if you want to.

Look at the pickup wires and wiring diagram to be sure. If there isn't a dedicated wire (or set of wires) for connecting to the battery, they're passive pickups. Since the LP's are almost CERTAINLY passive, you should have no problems just connecting them to the preamp as normal.

Ultimately, it really comes down to what your preferences are in a bass. Nobody can tell you which you'd like more.

It's really subjective which one is better. It's all about what you want out of the bass. Do you want a jazz neck or a little bit thicker neck? Do you want the jazz bass sound or the DC pickup (GGi4) sound? Do you want 34" scale or 35"? These are questions you can only answer for yourself. These are two very different kinds of basses in sound and design.

As for which one is higher quality build, I couldn't tell you, as I've never played a G.Gould. But I can tell you that Modulus are top notch in quality, fit and finish, components, hardware, etc. and VJ4s have very thin, fast necks. Great for if you have smaller hands, or prefer a really slim neck. If you want an Idea of what a VJ4 is like, play an active fender jazz bass and imagine the neck slightly thinner at the nut. And VJ4's can usually have their action set very low. VJ4's are worth more than GGi4s because they cost more new and they are less readily available.

Side note: My only issue with every VJ4 I've played is they tend to be pretty heavy. Mine's around 10lbs. I can't speak to how heavy GGi's are. But if you're looking at that Red-burst quilted top in the classifieds for $1650, you should go with that if you want a jazz bass. It's a sick price for the specs it has.

GGI4's are running about 8 pounds-ish.. The problem with the "which is better" whole thing is everyone has a differing opinion as to what that means. Ballin is 100% correct. We cannot tell you which is best for you. We only have the facts on what the bass is and our own personal opinions. I have a Genesis 4, but that is wildly different than a VJ 4 which is crazy different from a Q4 and a GGi4. I have never played the latter 3. I have a bunch of Q5's, Genesis 5's and 2 GG 5's. Every one of them plays completely different. Different boards, frets, electronics, bridges, nut material, decade made and so on. In my area, I buy first then see if I like it. I am ok with that since nobody around here uses anything like these in either the Modulus or G.Gould, well except for me and my guitar player

I wish I was... I'm in Washington. I'm also a high school student, so I'm really nervous about spending so much money on a bass.

I completely understand. The beat thing is these basses will be with you for as long as you want. Worth every penny that you can scrape up. Most of us started on basses far below yhe quality and price of a Modulus. Hang in there and work up to it if you need to.

Yeah, I've been playing for a bit over 8 years now. Just about half of my life. My main basses right now are an Ibanez ICB200BS, and an Ibanez GSR205SM. I really kinda want to upgrade, though...

Great basses. I had been playing for about 18 or 20 years before I bought my first Modulus. Didn't at all know what I was buying other than my guitarist raved over her 1998 Genesis 1 guitar. At that time it was 1 or 2 years old. Amazing guitar, so I picked up a Genesis 4. Custom ordered from Anderson Page over at Modulus. Still have it. That was in 2000. I have been playing now for about 37 years. I earned every last bass I own. Well maybe not the G&L, but you get the point..

Damn... wish I had the cash to custom order. I've only got like $300 in cash right now. And another ~$700 on Craigslist. I keep on searching and getting all excited over basses.

Why do I have to be so impatient?

Keep in mind, that was 17+ years ago. Not to mention, I had a couple of artist endorsements (EMG and GHS) that I got a good discount from as well. Still, back then the G4 was still in the $1200 range my cost. Very expensive. I was playing a Mexican Precision Deluxe Special at the time, so it was quite the step up. Very scary purchase since I was playing 4 nights a week, working a day job and supporting a wife and 3 kids.

I lusted after a Modulus at your age as well. 16 was the age that I really got into Flea, and I learned about his brand of choice, Modulus. Ever since then, I wanted one so badly I could taste it. I dealt with that want for almost 10 years before I was in a position to drop the coin on one.

It's always super nerve racking to spend the most you've ever spent on something. It passes. Since the first time I dropped over $2k on a bass, I've since spent 3 times as much on a bass. And I don't regret a thing.
