Modulus Mob

Hey guys, it's been forever since I've been on this forum! Glad to see it's still going strong!

Anyways I wanted to give y'all a heads up that I just posted my one of a kind VJ4 for sale in the classifieds. For Sale - 2002 Modulus VJ4 AAAAA quilted maple (w/lots of upgrades!)

I will give a discount to mob members if one of you is interested in it. It's real hard for me to let go of it so it'd be great to rehome it with a fellow Moddy enthusiast. Hope you all are well and staying healthy!

I bought my first modulus Q5 sweet spot turbo many years ago new from a local music store. I've had it now, well maybe since '96 or '97 as it is a '96 ( obviously with no truss rod).

Anyway, I've learned more about my bass in the past few days in this thread than the many years that I've had it.

I've had zero issues with it all this time and have always used Ernie Ball strings. My second is also a '96 Q5 sweet spot turbo. The third is also a '96, which I picked up at the local music go round last year. Never any neck issues on the first two and the third's neck is fine.

I know, "once you're in, you're in." But I'm happy to say I'm the owner of a like-new Q5!

I started with DrZ's Q5: here

I am not a huge fan of gold hardware so......

I was able to source all new black hardware including ResOLite tuners and an aluminum Hipshot bridge. I saved at least $40 by not using the Modulus badged tuners. Sacrilege, I know. I replaced the knobs with the aluminum Gotoh O-ring knobs. I'm not sure how I feel about them yet, but they did save a great deal of weight, which is awesome in my book! I like the MTD/Lakland plastic knobs but I don't know if those come in a concentric knob.

If you want to see how much each component saved, you can geek out on the data here. I rounded some of the numbers, so don't count on my thousandths being accurate, but it's close enough to see what components make the most difference. If weight is a concern to some of you, maybe this can help a little.

9.6lbs. down to 8.9lbs. so about 0.7lbs. savings. I was surprised there was a difference of 2g between the gold and the black jack plates but I did use a smaller nut that I may replace at some point

Here's the result, I am super happy with it! The color in the pics is a little more orange than it is without the flash. I think Modulus calls it vintageburst.

Hello Mobsters,
I'm not a member yet but I'm thinking about checking this one out.

With the virus situation, it might be a tad risky just to arrange for curbside pickup without a chance to check it in person. And I realize someone here might decide to pick it up before me...but if so at least it goes to a good home.

The only marking on it is on the headstock. Any chance this specimen is a Modulus neck on another's body? Anything I should, or shouldn't see on a 1989 model?:help:

Thanks in advance. It's really great to see Geoff and others from the old works active here!
Hello All,
I wanted to follow up to say I picked up this bass over the weekend. It is a fabulous instrument, I'm feeling it will soon be my main instrument. 35 inch scale, great b string and tons of sustain are among its many great features. It came with flat wounds on it, and I like the tone with them.
I don't notice any 'harshness' when I compare it to my main bass, a mid 90s Carvin bolt on fretless 5er.

Thanks to Geoff and all those responsible for this amazing piece of workmanship! I will enjoy this for many years to come.:bassist:

wowowowowowow :o

Back in the Mob with authority. At one point I went down to a single bass, the best bass Id ever had. It was a no truss rod walnut top Q5 with lane poors. When the neck on that bass failed, I was heartbroken and lost.

This is a new build. 34” scale. EMGs. This might be my old bass’s equal. Just unboxed but the potential is there.

Gotta love anyone with a Distressor in their rack! I usually use that or an API in the studio depending on the project.
