Modulus Mob

A chechen fretboard has a much warmer tone while still retaining that Modulus snap. The phenolic boards can be a bit sterile especially with the EMG's IMO and IME.

Agree. My Q5 has the standard phenolic board and while it sounds punchy and clear, is a bit bright (standard Bart/Bart). I turn the treble down a lot, especially through certain "hi-fi" heads like Genz Benz & GK. As my friend, Gard says: "it's better to tone down an aggressive bass than try to make a dull bass sound punchy".

I think Chechen & Modulus are a great combo for a neck/ fingerboard.

I would snag that vj in a second if it had a graphite neck and a composite fret board, at 899 buy it now it would have been a steal. I might start bidding on the q 4 sweet spot but I have 2 concerns you guys might be able to help me with. What kind of tones can one get out of a single Bart humbucker and a 3 band eq?? Could I cop a good P like tone, a nice scooped slap tone to maybe a nice musicman nasal finger style tone. Also I assume if it's a 90's Q it has no truss rod, have these no rod basses been able to stay straight through out the years or is that the reason the put rods in them now? I would love a little help guys as I make my first step on to modulus land.

Been playing my Modulus Quantum 5 since 1994. Here she is in Flamed Koa. I'd like to be a club member.

Jeff, that's a beautiful fiver! The koa top is amazing.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks Jim... I haven't had a bass I've played so much for so long as that one. I'll never let it go. I have a thing for koa. My Fender Jazz is koa too. It all started with a BC Rich Mockingbird I bought in 1980. Alas, I don't have it any more.

There has got to be issues with the neck though. Those string trees are not original and usually they add them to add string dive for proper tuning. This one does not have a truss rod, which could mean some pretty extensive work on the neck if not a replacement. But then again, I could be wrong
