Most annoying instrument (to your ears)?

I remember when I was very very young and my hearing range was from here to the moon and back, I remember getting those chalk board goose pimples on my arm and neck whenever I heard a LIVE banjo performing, or tried to play it myself. However, not on any record, or tv show did it annoy me even once.

You can skip buying or learning how to play a bagpipe, if you want that "ugly" sound. An electric guitar, run-of-the-mill effects and you're done:

The only thing wrong with this one, is that it is in tune. Bagpipes uses slightly off skew "old" tuning. And it may very well be that out-of-tunes that makes people go bonkers.

Maybe because the amateur plays so that he could become a competent player?

we have it easy compare to every classical instrument that take dedication to have a pleasing tone and play well enough... and let's not forget the cost of those instrument ... so yeah because of that we have a lot of people putting the barre minimum on a cheap instrument through an expensive amp

I had a guy play a saxophone in my ear for years. I tried to explain, you see that big hole pointed in my face and not yours, it is f'n loud and it screeches too! Nice enough on a recording, but pointing at you is another thing.

I knew from reading the thread title bagpipes were going to take a major hit in here and as I expected, they did. As a bassist AND bagpiper I have to say they are music to my ears (yes,
properly tuned and played of course!) but recognize they are pretty much in the "either love 'em or hate 'em" category. To each his own of course, if you hate 'em, so be it. Now, if
vocal chords are considered an instrument, I would strongly agree with someone who earlier mentioned Yoko Ono! ;)

Bagpipes are meant to be played on a battlefield, not in a "rock" band. On a foggy morning you're on the line with your buddies loading your musket and you hear the bagpipes and snare drum approaching in the distance. You can't see them yet, but you know that that sound means there's a few hundred crazy Scottish Motherf***ers out there with 2-foot bayonets on the ends of 5-foot muskets about to charge you, you know they also carry swords in case it gets too close for guns, and you know that those guys wake up pissed off just because that's who they are. They wear skirts and are firmly secure in their masculinity because they are good at killing people who want to make something of it. Bagpipes = Death Coming For You

I hate the Dropkick Murphys.

Also, my answer is the accordion.
