Double Bass Moving the left hand - convincing a school teacher

I think, from what you have told us, the school band teacher is being a pedantic, power mad , martinet. Not all that unusual I fear. I've done that gig, and have no excuses for this person.
That the parents don't have the wisdom to back you is sad too. But how did it get to be such a nasty thing?

I wonder if a more non-confrontational approach might have worked better. Next time.

Arguing using an authority, even Simandel just inflames the territorial insecurities of insecure people.

My kids both went to this school although both were in band, not orchestra. My memories of this teacher are all positive until this incident. I am not angry, just sad that I seem to have pushed a button without intending to on a person of whom I had thought highly. As you say, next time.

Timing is everything.

Maybe you approached him/her at the wrong time for them to be able to accept a divergent view as other than criticism. We're all occasionally thin skinned. And how can you not be surprised when you are met with unexpected reactions from those you think you can read?
Forgetting is often a blessing, and forgiving is useful if it hastens forgetting. Glad I'm just writing these platitudes and don't have to read them.
