Actually sounds pretty good.

Wow. Please share more info on the process. Did you fill the pickup cavities and refinish it?
Now I’m going to have to make it happen…off to research.

Yup, just stripped it, traced the pickup on a scrap piece of wood and glued that in to fill the cavity, routed the j pick ups and then refinished it with some spray paint:

Nice!!! I'm doing "sort of" the same thing. Although... I'm using a Delano Hybrid MM pickup. It gives the option of having the full humbucker, ooooooorrrrr... switching to a J. [edit] Also... it'll be sportin' a JTEX Distiller pre, with a switchable option to bypass it, and go passive with a tone knob. Pics soon...

If one of those options is no pickguard, and more importantly if there were an option for no control plate, then I'd be very tempted.

I could see that being a no-go due to the change of routing to the body. Assuming they're doing this in a way to streamline things as efficiently as possible since most of their SR5's are with the routes in the front covered by the pickguard. I know they do it for BFR's sometimes but not too often.

Does this mean that coveted/discontinued models are available for "too much" money?

Probably not. There's definitely a faction of people that seem to try to re-sell some new MM basses on reverb for huge prices but they never seem to sell. Rationale people seem to sell them for realistic prices from time to time, just have to be patient. Is there a particular model/finish you are thinking of?

Not at all. [I was being factious, as usual] I have my Big Al's, Sterling HH, H, Classic, and HS, plus the PRE EB Sabre's in my avatar. Sold ALL of my Stingrays. Been on the hunt for a Reflex HSS. But... it MUST be white. Not even sure I'd like it...

Oooh, so you want one of these, side from being white..:

I was lucky to find this locally (~1 hour drive in Canada is about as local as you can get) for I think $2200 CDN in 2022. Very cool bass and so versatile with the different pick up configurations. I'd assume a Big Al SSS would get pretty close though if that is what you have.

Yep. There's one available near me for $1,400.00 USD. But... I don't like RED, or BLUE basses, and... I'm not a FLIPPER.
