I'm not a huge fan of the Stingray pickguard shape/look. But the right color or design can really "make" the bass so to speak.

I think the SR4 pick guard is awesome, and what makes the bass what it is. It's the control plate cover that is a little odd in my opinion. The 20th anniversary Stingray with no control plate IMHO is the sexiest stingray ever produced.... I hope the 40th is done the same way (hint hint Sterling!)

Has anyone noticed that the Classic Stingray models play so much better than their contemporary counterparts?

I just recently purchased a Classic 5 which played incredible out of the box and was even more silky after setting it up. Now for a moment, I lost my mind and checked out some of the new versions in 4 and 5 strings and brought one home but was unable to get it set up to match (or even come close) to my current 5. Even out of the box the new one(s) were not even close to being as playable. These went back as returns after a day and a half of trying to get it set up.

I say this because years ago I had a 5 string Stingray (Mid 80's model) with the Piezo option and this thing was just incredible. But I have stayed away from getting another one in the recent 10 years because I have noticed that the current models just don't have that fast neck like the older models. Up until I just purchased the Classic which was a fluke for trying out and loving it the moment I played it I just haven't played one that feels right.

What I have noticed is, when they changed the nut design the action on these seem to suffer.

Thoughts? Anyone else experience this? Or was I just lucky to get a really good one?

Not something I've noticed. I have 3 non classic Stingrays (two of which have the compensated nut) and they all play incredibly with extremely low action. I also strongly prefer the oiled neck to the gloss neck of the Classic series.

If anything, I have yet to play a Classic series that is set up well at all. Well, to my liking at least.

I've played a lot more Classics that should have been sent back to the factory than I have the others. That inconsistency is kinda sad for a bass of its price level.
I'm thinking you got one that was made really well, which is cool!
And FWIW, the piezo option was added to the lineup in 1999.

I have two 2001 Stingray 4s, one with a Status neck, and managed to set both up pretty much identically with the action really low. Damn near business card thickness at the 12th. There's minor fret buzz, but I like low action so I don't mind.

Yeah, I saw the typo "80's" after I posted it but it was still a mid 90's though. Couldn't have been that late. Yeah, I think I did get a good one cause as soon as I started playing it I was sold!

I just haven't played a contemporary one that I have liked. Working on the one I brought home (and returned) it seemed like the neck pocket was not cut low enough. I say this because with the bridge turned all the way down the E string couldn't go any lower than .60 (a conservative .60 at that...) and steadily increase to .90+ up the rest of the neck. And even shimming it (with multiple heights), adjusting the neck etc... it would still only be playable at that height.

With my Classic, the string height is .40 all the way from bridge to nut (with a B string at that) and is nice and even.

So, I guess I just got lucky and damn happy at that! ;)

Pretty sure the rosewood neck is not available for normal orders, only for limited edition 'rays from time to time.

If you have a flick back through this group you'll find some though. 5string gecko has one from memory.
