There's obviously a lot of love for Jaco's "Jaco Pastorius". However, if you want to hear him as an accompanist, check out "Hejira" by Joni Mitchell. I think that sonically, it may be his best sounding record.

Still some massive holes but I've got this thread to come back to (still lacking in jazz and Beatles!). Thanks to all who contributed - none of your suggestions have been ignored and they'll be revisited!

Can't believe I forgot to mention "Aja". Classic album by my favorite band. Chuck Rainey played all the tracks on this one and did a phenomenal job. Every track is great, but pay particular attention to his playing on "Peg" and "Josie."

Any albums with James Jamerson, John Entwistle, Paul McCartney and Donald "Duck" Dunn should probably top your list for 5 albums that you must buy.

These guys are not only pioneers in the electric bass but damn good bass players too!

Almost every bass player after them, is what they are because of THEM!

One album?
Fishbone "Truth and Soul" - demonstrates how the bass can anchor the music in different styles -deep grooves all the way to slapping at an elite level. I wouldn't consider myself a diehard Fishbone fan at all but I consider this a near perfect album with an incredible bass talent on top of his game. Just check out bonin in the boneyard and ghetto sound wave- I guarantee you will want more and not be disappointed.
