It was the upright until that band fell apart. For now, it's the Flamingo, a 1991 Gibson Thunderbird refinished in Burgundy Mist Metallic and with Thunderbucker pickups and all chrome hardware. And covers. Gotta have covers if you are going to be a poseur like me.

Why? The upright because. The Flamingo because I like the way it looks and the way it sounds and the ergos. I'm one of those people who think Thunderbird ergos are perfect.

These days I find myself mostly playing either my Spector Euro fiver strung for high-C or a fretless Willcox Lightwave Saber 4-string.

Been trying to get back up to speed on flute too.

I guess an old progger’s tastes and preferences never change.

I've got several that could easily be my favorites, but the one on the right is definitely it right now. An ESP LTD Bunny Brunel Signature. The tone on it is unlike any other bass I own. Picture a cross between a Spector NS Dimension and an EBMM Stingray Special HH on Position 4.

why such a cheap bass, you ask?

i love the black with that pickguard, the neck is comfy and fast, unlike some broncos, this one arrived intonated, the size is super comfortable but with more fingerboard room than a 28.6" bass, and the pickup... well, something's up with it. i've owned 3 broncos and played many. the rest have your average single coil noise, which makes sense as a bronco has a single single coil pickup. but for some reason, this one is pretty much silent. and that stock pickup sounds better to my ears than any of the others i've played including the other bronco i played through the exact same rig.

Funny thing is, when I bought my two Wals they weren’t super ultra desirable boutique basses which cost an arm and a leg (and a couple of internal organs for shipping). They were not particularly sought after, out of fashion, niche basses from the late 70s/80s. Each cost me in the region of 500 bucks (GB). Folks are horrified that I used them for 100s of pub, club and wedding gigs but to me, they’re just my two favourite basses! Still love them! Still take them out to our local jam night.
