My guitar Player is Drowning Me

There is no problem if everyone around you is into that. But this thread is about someone seeking an escape from that.

They don't care if your amp speaks to you when fed enough power and takes life, they just want a solution to speak to a band mate about excessive volume in their own mix.

There is a problem though with what you advocate, a really big one - but if all the advice and warnings in this thread and on these forums hasn't grabbed your attention yet.....

what am i advocating and what is the issue? if its regarding playing loudly i always take into account bandmates opinions/feelings, sound quality, and protect my hearing. what base am i, or the others who are on this side of the fence, not covering?

If you are using hearing protection, what is the point of turning up to inaudible levels that interfere with each other and destroy the sound waves you create?

Wouldn't it be easier and a whole lot cheaper to just turn down to the levels that you would hear through your ear protection?

Wouldn't that maintain the 'pure' sound clarity while preserving natural harmonics that otherwise get filtered out by earpieces?

we do it for fun. playing quitely without earplugs is not the same as playing loudly with earplugs...for us.
So it is literally a 'power' trip, that is fine but it's pretty bad advice for the vast majority of musicians who want to progress as a band, and you can expect resistance whenever you suggest that it isn't a problem.

It is a problem to the OP, that is why he asked the question...

at least you aren't assuming a lot of things...dude - i totally understand you have your opinon and playing at a standard volume is great for you. others like to play loudly and fortunately this in no way affects you - which is great! we are obviously not going to agree, as this is all opinions based, but youre starting to make many assumpions and rep'ing your opinion as fact. differnt strokes man.

the OP said his guitarist got a new amp and now he can't keep up. he asked about how he can get louder and not how to convince everyone that they should turn down. So to me it seems like he is ok with the volume but needs gear advice.

It is fact. You are ruining your sound by over-amplification in a small room, absolutely destroying it. You aren't into music for musics sake, you are into playing with power and SPLs. That is your prerogative and more power to you, but it is poor advice in general for a practicing band and you shouldn't be surprised to hear this.

maybe they are going for a "ruined" sound. you don't know how they want to express themselves. like it or not, it's art, there is no right or wrong way.

How to mix your selves on stage/ in rehearsal
1. Bass drum volume = bass guitar volume. Yes, it seems low. It is. Suck it up. This is a team sport.
2. snare volume= lead instrument volume. Yes, its kind of loud, its supposed to be, suck it up. This is a team sport.
3. accompanying instruments under lead/snare. This is also where the lead should be when not the focus of attention. Yes, it seems low. It is. Suck it up. This is a team sport.
4. Vocals Uber Alles. Unless you're Earthless.

Been through this year's ago. The drummer sets the volume level. But it sounds like you are going to need a bigger rig. I got so tired of being drowned out I went way overboard so in theory I could bury the guitarist at will. Remember the goal is to play as a band not who can be the loudest.

you do your best to get your sound in any venue. is it always exactly the same? probably not, but most people are too drunk to notice anyway :)
lol come on, you are making things up to justify wanting to play loud. That is why I am poking the holes....

If you want to play loud and can, fine! Seriously it is fun sometimes! But just say so without the made-up rationalizations about art and the essence of rock and roll being the abuse of your equipment...

It is bad advice for most bands. And most ears.

Define "abuse"? Gear driven to the edge of its specs has a different sound to stuff kept in the "normal" operating zone. That can be part of the art. Hell, listen to solo'd Jamerson tracks- dude was driving the CRAP out of the tech he had available to make his art. And arguably, he had a far larger influence than you or i ;)
