My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

Things have been going far too smoothly lately for me not to have some stupid snag in the process right?

I was getting ready to spend two uninterrupted days hanging the lid of the main room. The first step was to put some guide marks on the double top plates where the bottom chord of the trusses intersect them. I’ll be covering up the trusses, so marking them in advance will give me a reference for snapping chalk lines and not having to install screws in a “hope for the best” type method. I did that. Next I needed to unpack the acoustic putty pads to go around the light boxes before I started building the inner leaf of the ceiling assembly. Imagine my surprise when the supplier didn’t include them in the box. They also forgot to include the electrical outlet seals. I don’t need those immediately, so that’s not a concern at this point, but it’s a bummer none the less.

So, I have two days slated for studio construction, the space heater has the structure all up to a good working temperature, my phone is fully charged and loaded with a killer Pandora station to keep me motivated, and... Nothing will get done.

Are the missing items on the packing slip?
Is there any chance that the delivery person missed a box?
Curiously, the putty pads are on the packing slip, but the outlet seals are not. Both of those items are included on my receipt that I received from the supplier via email when I placed the order.

The FedEx guy might have missed a box. No way to know at this point since it was delivered in December and nothing else has come of it since then. What’s more, my wife was home when the packages were delivered, so it’s not as if some porch pirate swung in and made off with a box of putty pads and outlet seals. If they had, they’d be very disappointed in the booty they’d obtained on this particular pirate raid to say the least, haha.

Insult to injury time: Realizing that studio work was a wash for the weekend I decided to go and replace the shift knob on my car. The factory knob’s leather had separated like an old band-aid. I received my replacement knob yesterday. Eager to accomplish SOMETHING today I opened up the box to discover that the face of the thing is cracked!

That’s it... throwing in the towel on today. If anyone needs me I’ll be on my couch in my underwear eating Doritos and playing video games.

The putty pads not being on the packing slip is an indication that they made a mistake. Your FedEx tracking number should allow you to determine how many boxes were in the shipment that day, even if there were multiple tracking numbers. Normally when I track one, they all come up.

They’ve begun fighting it as I feared. We’ll see how this shapes up. If I were a betting man I’d wager that they’re going to attempt to wash their hands of it, in which case I’ll purchase the pads and seals from one of their competitors, and then contest that portion of the charges through my credit card company. I hate doing that, but me paying for their (or FedEx’s) oversight is not something I’m willing to do.

Hopefully I’m wrong and they make things right.

Sigh. Hope that it works out. If your packing slip does not have an item and your purchase order does, clearly it is proof that they made at lease one mistake. How can they explain that away.

I once had a dispute with a company and decided to take it to a higher level. I called and asked for the president, then asked his secretary for his name. I sent a nice letter asking for their assistance in resolving a problem that I was having with their company. I made my case. It worked like a charm.

The email chain thus far:

Me: You screwed up. Here are the facts.
Them: We'll check it out.
Them: No we didn't.
Me: Yes you did. How can you explain this discrepancy if you didn't?
Radio silence

I'm going to give them until the end of the day to respond. If they haven't, tomorrow I'll send them a more stern email and if no response is given after a few hours I'll follow it up with a phone call.

Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Starting off by calling you a liar doesn’t bode well. Studios construction costs do have a way of getting out of hand. I’m sure that they encounter their share of unscrupulous people trying to pull a fast one.

But that doesn’t excuse their actions.

Spend the $100 somewhere else and move on.

Send them a final email that you didn’t receive what was order and put in a claim on your CC. Don’t respond to them further.
That’s effectively what I’m doing. I’ve already sourced some other putty pads, so once I’m back from vacation I can get to work. I’ll give them some time to sort it out before making a claim on my CC since time is no longer a factor.

I’m back from vacation and had considered doing some work in the studio today. I pull out the package of putty pads I picked up from my other studio-building buddy here in Seattle and notice that they won’t form and adhere properly in environments under 50 degrees (F). It’s currently in the mid 40s and the overnight will be in the mid 30s. That’s PROBABLY close enough that they would be fine, but the last thing I want is to install the pads, throw up some drywall, obscure my view of how they’re performing in terms of forming a seal around the back of the light boxes and have them separate from the metal box surface overnight. I decided to hold off on installing them until things warm up just a bit more.

In an effort to keep my composing chops up I popped into my makeshift interim bedroom studio to lay down something. Anything. I have a sheet of themes/concepts that can be as ridiculous as “surf rock tune for a sci-fi TV show” or “John Hughes movie type of thing” that I occasionally pull out and will attempt to spin something worthwhile from that initial idea. I sit down in my office chair, notice that my computer is powered down, attempt to power it on and... nothing. Unplug, re-plug, hit the power button... nothing. Try a different outlet... nothing. Unplug everything attached to it save for the power cable and try again... nothing. My wife has the same model computer, so I’ll borrow the power cable from her machine, but assuming it’s another case of nothing, my 6-year old computer’s power supply might have gone out.
