NAD! SVT7 Pro (also comparing it to my Streamliner 900)

We've had a few back and forths about the SML 900 regarding tone, mids, tube rolling etc. Based on this thread alone I ordered an SVT 7 and it should be here in the next few days. What in your words should I expect compared to the Streamliner? I've played that head in so many situations now and always lack mid attack, articulation, clarity or whatever one wants to call it. Warm, big, fluffy is how I describe the streamliner. I need a bit more bite and articulation with a chunk of that warmth and flavor.

And yes, thank you a TON for the clips- for me it came at a perfect time and was extremely informative. Keep them coming as they are the best I've seen on this site....

if you like the punch of the streamliner but need more midrange articulation, i think the 7pro is perfect for you. since i've had it a week now and play thru it every day, the 'new amp honeymoon' might be over but it's tone never fails to impress me every time i play thru it, and i actually like it better now than the first day that it arrived.

I played one of these the other day. I suppose I had not paid much attention. Pretty much a carbon copy of the SVT3 Preamp with less tubes. I was thinking for some reason these might be a little different. Though I loved the cush of the 3''s driver tube but never got along with the EQ section. Bleh, I reckin I have grown too fond of the 9.0 EQ. My loss I guess.

You can tell this is a "Geezer convention" Now that we are covered on the 'old fart's aches and pain' anyone for bird watching with Binoculars? :hiding:

i sold both of my SVP's a while ago so i can't directly compare them now. i liked the sound of them, but SVP-Pro was too dang noisey (and i never used the graphic since it was SS and i never needed it anyway) and i preferred the SVP-CL but it didn't have enough output level to drive my crown xti's unless i ran something in between it and the amp to boost its level.

that said, using memory as a guide, i think the 7Pro 'tonally' sounds more like the SVP-CL did, with maybe a little less transparency, but with more punch.

Well I got my 7 Pro yesterday. Long story short, with my gear and my sound, I surprisingly like it a lot better than the VR. Call me crazy, but it has a certain punch that I never got with the VR, yet still has all that low end thickness. Plus it is looouuuddd. I was using it at band practice last night with a Guild B-301 and a Berg NV610. I think it is my new amp ;)

Thanks for your advice and clips john, very happy I bought one of these!

Good to hear. I don't think I'd say I like it more than a VR, but, sure it is loud. & you can get a fair bit more volume outta it into a small (ish) cab than the 300w of the SVT-CL/VR/II. IME at least

glad to hear that you like the amp. it kinda doesn't surprise me that you like it better than your VR. and i completely understand what you're saying about its punch. for me, the VR has a bit more of a complex tone and response and i like my VR a little more, but to me, the 7pro is equally good, just a little bit different, and like you said, it can go ALOT louder.

Guyz - thanks one and all

If I may indulge your expertise and patience. I have been passively reading TB (especially amps section) for some 7 days now and borderline 4 to 5 hrs per day. Am tossing and turning - decisions, decisions. How do you chew the chicken and spit out the bones with all the subjectivity? I have been Mesa'd, Benz'd, berg'd, etc... and now, an epifany! -

When I rolled up on this thread my interest piqued and things began coming together, finally, Thank God! Gee wiz! Ampeg, the gold standard ----Kinda like Babe Ruth's old home run record - surpassed in recent years by artificially beefed up players all taking the same drugs and, all chasing Babe Ruth, the gold standard that did it the old fashioned way - maybe not a candidate for GQ - but highly effective at his craft.

Here it is guyz the nub of my gist: For a guy like me whose sound and playing could be summed up thusly: Jamerson-Prestia-Bruce Thomas- Dee Murray - JPJ - In your collective humble opinions, WILL A PRO 7 WITH A 610 HLF CAUSE ME TO HAVE ANY REGRET?

I had to dig back through this thread to find this. According to Carvin's site...

Supports gear up to 3.5" high, 10.5" deep, 19" wide

And while I have my 7 Pro now, I didn't actually measure it, but the manual says:

Size (H x W x D): 4.0 in (with feet) x 15.6 in x 11.5 in (with feet)

So I'm judging by your picture you didn't have much trouble fitting it in. Any issues with the depth of the amp? Does it stick out the back at all?

Given your references, I don't see a way a 7Pro could disappoint you. You should be able to find as the tones you like with little effort.
How did you like the clips JohnK made with his various basses ? He gave quite a taste of what the amp sounds like.
As for the 610HLF, I couldn't say, as I prefer sealed cabs and have little experience with vented. I'd say give ot a try before buying.
My 2 cents, but I think you'll get more useful advise from other!

I would say your regrets would be at a minimum. The 610HLF is voiced with a bigger low end than what dudes like those you named off were using in their heydays, but it's not crazy low end like the 410HLF, just a little extra warmth. My favorite Ampeg cabs are voiced more like the 810e and 410he with more of a rolled off low end, but I also have a couple of PF115he's that have a low end similar to the 610HLF, and I enjoy using them for a change of pace sometimes.
