It is the same front end as the AD200 (two 12AX7's), and it has a switch (:eyebrow:) which supposedly allows it to put out 500 watts into either a 4-ohm or an 8-ohm load. I'd like to know how they do that. But I agree, it sounded very good. And a 1,000-watt version is coming.

how much of the AD200 character would you say the Bass Terror retains due to the identical preamp stage?
How does it compares to other SS or Hybrids you're familiar with?
Tell us more ... :D

From what I heard at NAMM, at a minimum, it retains a superficial relationship to the AD200 tone. Again, this is at a minimum. It can probably cop a lot of the AD200 vibe, and it's definitely intended to do so.

That being said, as good as class-D amps have become, for most brands that offer similar amps in both a class-D and a non-class-D (AB, G, whatever) option, I do hear some differences, so I am not prepared to say that it (or any of the other class-D amps) sound(s) identical to its heavier brethren.

If you like the Orange tone, you should like the Terror Bass for sure, but it does not sound exactly like the AD200 (you can't entirely emulate tube output sections, either, IMHO, but that is another argument). All in all, though, I think it's a very impressive head.

The only other solid state bass amp I've seen with that capability is the Helborg amps, which I believe have an 'output transformer', if I have that term correct, similar to tube amps which results in the power being roughly the same at different impedance levels.

However, I thought those transformers were big and heavy, so it seems unlikely that is the case. Interesting if it works, and the idea of a company who loves all tube sound to put a transformer or whatever in their SS offering to move it closer to an all tube tone makes sense.

One method would be with dual output stages that can be parallel or series bridged. Some Carver power amps from the '80s had that option.

The Orange both was definitely one of the more impressive booths in an unimpressive NAMM. The 4/8 switchable operation is intriguing. The other thing I like about the Orange, is they left some room for the tube. Tubes react to atmosphere and distance. Remember the old tube amp guru's (guys like Dumble) strongly believe that sound is effected by the air space around the tube and distance between components. I've always had my doubts about mini-heads that don't gain any space and "add" a tube. The Orange actually has room for the tube or tubes to stand up and dissipate heat inside the platform and yet it's still a small package. Is it worth the money? Who knows, the new Orange cabs looked very interesting to, a 410 in a 210 sized package. Would love to comparison test some of this stuff.

Those cabs do look interesting. I have never seen an isobarically-loaded cab like that. It looks like standard 2nd order ported. I wonder how the speaks are wired relative to each other: in phase or out of phase. I would expect 2 iso-loaded drivers to sound more like 1.5 drivrs but better SQ.

Anyone know the price/avaiblity on the heads?

+1 to Tom on that. I am based in the UK...and I have pestered Orange with emails ever since I bought my Orange rig. I am waiting for the 1000W version....and they say it IS coming :)
