NBA Playoffs

Bah. If Allen had merely sucked instead of having one of the worst shooting games in Finals history, Celts would have either won or taken it to the very last possession.

Big props to Fisher, though. He was great exactly when they needed it.

The refs have made questionable, if not out right incorrect calls on both sides. Having said that, the Celtics executed better down the stretch and won game 2 and the Lakers did the same and won game 3. FISHER WAS HUGE, WHICH IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR HIM DURING THE FINALS! Lakers 2-1, Celtics 1-2.

GO LAKERS!!!!

You hate to blame a game on one player, but you have to think that if Ray Ray made at least 1 or 2 of his 13 shots, they Celtics would have taken it. Reeeeal tough for him, I see him bouncing back and going off in Game 4.

I just have to add, we were having a discussion about video review in the World Cup thread, and I made the point that it would slow down the game horribly, and cause a slippery slope of things that must be reviewed. I know that the "slippery slope" argument isn't technically a valid one, but that's bullocks because the NBA showed us during the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter that slipper slopes for video review DO happen. The NBA put in review initially just for buzzer beaters, and basically added a new thing to it each year since it was put in place. They had to review 3 different out of bounds calls in the last 2 minutes last night, and caused the game to go about 5 minutes longer. Now who cares, it's just 5 minutes, but still....it's annoying.

I thought the review thing was annoying too, but I had a dog in this hunt I'd sure be pissed if they got it wrong. What I don't get about the C's is this:

1) Why aren't they playing Wallace more at key times? He is much more effective against Gasol on D, he can get his shot off without being blocked in the paint and he has hit big clutch shots in the playoffs thru-out his career? Right now I feel both Wallace and Anderson are playing better then Perkins and yet Perkins seems to be getting more game time.

2) Why aren't the C's bigs Garnett and Wallace popping out more on pick and rolls for Jump shots?

3) Why do their starting bigs not run the floor? Perkins and Garnett are not that old and out of shape are they?

Now the officiating:

My biggest problem is the Lakers apparently never foul when blocking shots, but apparently the C's always foul when blocking shots.

I liked the review stuff in the last 2 minutes. Better to get those calls right than blow them. Just think if baseball had had this in place for 9th inning calls recently.

The C's played OK. If Ray Ray hadn't suddenly turned into a stonemason, they'd have been OK. Davis is playing well - good to see that energy from a big man with little hops.

Burk - who is "Anderson"?

it's amusing to hear a Celtic fan complain about flopping... :rollno:

great game all around, D-Fish really stepped up. on the other end, what the HECK happened to ray allen?

And I am amused by your amusement; but I appreciate that you couldn't bring yourself to deny that it was a terrific flop. ;)

The problem with Ray was that the shots weren't going down but the bigger problem is that it was obvious that KG's shots were going down and the Celts should have given him even more shots and not worry about trying to get Ray going.

I'm thinking of Davis, my bad.:hiding:

They badly called quite a few blocks in their favor too. Case in point. Pierce's missed layup when a foul was called on Bynum (or Odom I can't exactly recall), and looking in review, Pierce simply threw up an airball with no contact whatsoever. While bad calls suck, don't shine the light on them while casting a blind eye to those that were called in your favor.

I can agree with that. It is more the number of fouls that is affecting the games than the bad one which tend to even out over a series (and in first games, they probably evened out in the game), Game 3 had fewer fouls called than the first two, but still too many. If they can get into the low 40's we may even see something that resembles how good these two teams can be.

for whatever reason all 3 games have been called relatively tight. i'm in the "let 'em play" camp as well, but if nothing else the whistle is consistent for both teams.

as fans i'm sure we remember the missed calls against our club more, but i haven't watched a game yet in this series where the team that should have won didn't.

The problem hasn't been that the games have been badly called. It's that they have ben closely called to the point that it has favored the Lakers. Boston is the more physical team defensively. And closely called games certainly favor the Lakers. One of, and sometimes two of the C's big three have been in foul trouble every game. The other point is that the Lakers bigs haven't been in foul trouble at all, which I find odd considering how many block shots they have. I'm not saying the refs have favored LA, I'm saying the style of officiating has favored LA. And the fact that ALL three of the games so far have been called tight is not encouraging. The officials no doubt are needlessly injecting themselves into the series. And as a fan, I'm not tuning into these games to see Kobe, Pierce, Allen, or Garnett sitting on the bench in foul trouble. I do think its bad for the fans.

I think the same thing happened in the seventh game of the Det-SA series when Ginnobli and Billups both languashed on the bench in foul trouble for a big chunk of the game. Memo to the officials, it's the effin seventh game of the finals! We didn't tune in to see stars sitting on the bench for ticky-tack foul calls. Let the players decide the series.

I think for the most part, no matter what your opinion is concerning the finals, everthing in the end, balances out. But I will make this accessment with much prejudice. This series could have easily been 3-0 if Ray Allen does not go on a record breaking 3-point barrage. I won't even mention the closer Kobe is, that he usually owns the 4th quarter. It's about time someone else shared that burden.

The C's win ugly. Finally Rivers trusts his bench and it paid off. I've thought the whole series that both Wallace and Davis matched up better against the Laker bigs than Perkins. Bynum health is definitely a concern for the Lakers and his lack of a serious presence made a difference tonight. The officiating was still mediocre but didn't change the score. Rasheed Wallace still gets the worse whistle in the NBA, but he is by far the best low post defender on the floor for either team and he really makes Gasol work for his shot.

Kobe was the best player on the floor tonight, but the Celtics had the best team. Six guys in double figures in points; 9 guys with over 15 minutes; a 16 to 8 edge in offensive rebounds.

You can keep thinking that this was the Celtics last best effort if you want; I think you will see more of the same in the next two games. :D
