NCAA Football

Ya know Gard, I put my neck out on the line for your boys from Baton Rouge on Saturday in a room full of Auburn grads. I went on and on about how great Russell is. Your Tigers made me look bad.

I'll be looking for some serious revenge in three weeks when your Tigers come to The Swamp. In the meantime, check out a UF game if you want to see a real QB with real WR's to throw to. :D

Chris Leak is starting to look like the real deal.

Well, considering we get to toss out the historical perpective of the team's history and look at it however we see fit so long as the stats reflect our point of view...

whatever.

my intention wasn't to strip the validity from UM's winning tradition. they still have the sixth highest winning percentage since 1950, which is why they're one of the elite programs in college football. by comparison, michigan state -- who last won a national title in 1966 -- is 37th in winning percentage since 1950. i should also point out that boise state is fifth on the list since 1950 -- one ahead of michigan. there should be no argument over which program is superior, both historically and recently.

the salient point here, then, is that roughly 20 percent of their wins (197 of 849) were accumulated long before most of us were alive. and, more importantly, they were accumlated long before the forward pass was developed.

so while they're still one of the elite programs in college football, the practice of citing them as the winningest program is a little bit removed from the modern game. it's technically correct, but for the sake of reasonable argument, it's political distortion. that's all. they're still consistently one of the best teams in college football in any era, and that really can't be argued. but in the modern era, there are consistently better teams. two of them happen to be UM's archrivals -- ND and OSU. since UM fans are quick to point to their winning tradition when confronted with their recent struggles, i think it's perfectly valid to remind them of the context in which they view their team.

My reply would be the same, except now I feel it even more justified. When people say "winningest team in sport X", the concept is to include the entire history of the team and game, with circumstances of each era considered and accepted as part of that package. It's a statistic. It's not meant to reflect their current situation, or last season, or whatever....it's meant to encapsulate the team's record throughout its history.

When someone states that Michigan is the winningest team in college football and another replies with "true, but allow me to subtract any victories in eras I wasn't alive in, or before game advancements, or that ended even numbers", I find it perfectly valid to remind them of the context in which they have chosen to view the situation. You are no longer discussing the "winningest" in anything, you are arbitrarily drawing a line and counting what you want from when you want.

That stated....you're right on all counts, it's the context in which you chose to bring it up that I addressed.

S go State...... M go blow......guess I'm a Sparty through and through, but then again, unlike most Michigan fans, I actually graduated from Michigan State.....LMAO

Remember scalping tix to an MSU vs OSU game in C-Bus, where the weather conditions were near blizzard. The only tix I could get were in the south stands, near the top...

There was this shirtless body painted freako wearing nothing but green sweats & a green/white afro wig, doing the tomahawk chop the whole game.

It was so cold, we kidnapped the hot-chocolate girl, just so we could huddle around the urn for warmth... & wig boy just stood there, chopping the whole game...

well, marcus thomas, probably florida's best defensive player, is suspended for at least two games for failing a second drug test.

my visions of SEC East dominance are now obscured.

I heard the suspension was indefinite. Either way, Thomas is a moron. I'm with you on the SEC dominance dreams. This will be a tough one for Urban Meyer to work through.

anyone else hate notre dame as much as i do? i knew they were over-rated after their narrow win in week one, but i had no idea that michigan state would do this to them! if they don't get some balance on offense, even with their joke of a schedule, they will be in for a long season while teams key in their passing game......
ohio state didn't play penn state as tough as i thought they would, it was too close until the 4th- they are going down nov 18th!!

go blue!!
