Need a "hippie" bass... suggestions?

Hey, it screams "hippie" to me ;)

I think that would put a Acid Head over the top!

Ding-ding-ding! Winner winner chicken dinner!

Short-scale double-cutaway semi-hollow POS strung up with flats or nylon tapewound strings = archetypal hippie bass. Total flower-power sludge machine. Get yourself one of those basses, and grow your hair out long, and buy some beads
And then perhaps a leather band
To go around my head
Some feathers and bells
And a book of Indian lore
I will ask the Chamber Of Commerce
How to get to Haight Street
And smoke an awful lot of dope
I will wander around barefoot
I will have a psychedelic gleam in my eye at all times
I will love everyone
I will love the police as they kick the **** out of me on the street
I will sleep...
I will, I will go to a house
That's, that's what I will do
I will go to a house
Where there's a rock roll band
'Cause the groups all live together
And I will join a rock & roll band
I will be their road manager
And I will stay there with them
And I will get the crabs
But I won't care

Zappa is king.

But yeah, I'd go with anything with flats, and I'd probably choose a short scale hollowbody. And a pick is good to help with that sound. But if you do play with fingers, play over the neck pickup, or even on the end of the fingerboard. Hippies are pacifists, which means no PUNCH.

:ninja:

Couldn't resist.

Well, firstly as a bassist in a hippie band (aka 1974 Dead type stuff) your band is most certainly not hippie. Very much acid rock stuff. Anyway Gibson EB-0, EB-3 are some of the types used back then. Also Guild Starfire thing would be happenin. Really anything that would have been made back then will work today. Fender P or J basses would work great.

Starfire? With Darkstars?

Anything short scale with flats should be classic garage/surf/hippie/proto metal.

I'm a big fan of the Mosrite shape personally. Infact I aim to get an Eastwood Hi-Flyer or similar, and drop on the flats because I love the bass tone on older garage rock stuff.

What, is there any hippie bass outside of Alembic? Just kidding, just get a cheap squire and put new pups and pots in it. That ought to do the trick. I never could figure out why the supposed "King of Hippie" basses was over $1,000 at all. Isn't paying that much money for anything going to make you a slave to "the man." I think going cheap and modding it out is in the general hippie spirit.
