Bringing it up off the floor makes a huge difference. I last used the Doubleshot in a small rehearsal space (maybe 10x20) with a medium-loud drummer and guitar player. When I was setting up, I didn't think that it sounded that great but once we started playing, it filled the space and sounded superb. I had it on a little fold-up stool, maybe 12" off the (carpeted) floor. Give it some time, try it in a few different settings, see how it goes. FWIW, my home practice space is wood floors in a small room and it sounded great, but I don't really need an amp in there. It wasnt until I started taking it out that I realized its merits.
Don't know what to say about the hiss - I don't get any with my upright and an electric bass (P bass) - maybe you have a defective mid speaker or crossover??
