New Bergantino Cabinets!

I am not sure why ppl would not simply buy two HD112s.. instead of 1 HD212.. easier portability and flexibility.. money notwithstanding.. thoughts appreciated.

"Money notwithstanding" - key component here as most folks don't have an unlimited supply of money, especially over the last few years. If most of your gigs require something as large as a 212, you'd probably not spend the extra $300 just for portability of two 112's for the same amount of speaker surface area.

I would! 300 extra bones is trivial (for me). The portability is a key factor for me. Plus, it's nice to be able to just take one cab for a low to moderate volume gig.

But what works for me may be different than what works for someone else. That's why Jim provides us bassists with a choice! Life is good!

It's trivial for me too but I'm at the top of my profession. I just wouldn't think the average gigging bassist could drop that extra $300 and not think about it. Even with it not being about money for me, I'd just reason out why pay more for the same amount of cab? I guess there's an argument either way so I do understand the 112. It just wouldn't be enough difference between 2x44 lb cabs or a single 79lb cab unless I had a bad back or something.

for me, it's nothing.. I say this because you can store the cabs more easily.. in transport.. also, if I hurt my back lugging the cabinet 2x12, then that could cost more than $300 in the long run.. I was mainly asking the question from a technical point of view.. is there, sonically, any difference between the two.. I think you'd have to turn off the tweeter on one.. then you'd be the same. So.. again, money notwithstanding, I can't think of a reason not to stack two of these 1x12s atop each other.. and have the same output.. I will be using a similar setup.. an old HT112 and a new HD112.. I am curious to hear the differences between the two. but if I were starting over.. I'd get 2 1x12s.. or 2 2x10s.. and "create" a 2x12 or 4x10.. while having the flexibility of scaling down.. particularly for loading a cabinet into a vehicle, up stairs, etc.

If my memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall reading a post by Bill FM stating that there is no measurable difference in sound or performance [in this case between a stacked pair of HD112's and an HD212]. His comment was not specific to Berg cabs, but just that general comparison.

If Bill FM says it, then you can take it to the bank. Nobody on TB knows acoustical engineering as well as Bill FM.

So, sonic differences should not weigh in on the decision to go with a pair of 112's versus a single 212.

Blah,

My thinking aligns with yours. If you take the extra cost out of the equation (which isn't all that much anyway), I lean toward a stacked pair of HD112's.

I suppose there are folks who prefer a one-cab solution, which is cool. For me, I have to store my stuff upstairs, and so it would be easier for me to carry two 44 pound cabs one at a time up and down the stairs rather than a 79 pound cab. (I'm 55 years old, and I'm not as strong as I used to be.) Transporting across the ground doesn't matter to me since I use a Kart-a-Bag Super 600 hand cart, but it's that tote up and down the stairs that gets me.

for me, it's about load-in and transport.. I can store cabs, upright, in a covered car/truck in an upright position when separated. This capability goes away with a 2x12.. and I don't believe in storing cabs face-down, or on their backs, either. I am truly hoping there's not a difference sonically. $300 is a lot of money in life.. but heck.. these cabs are expensive in the first place.. they are worth the money, to me.. but most musicians I know would never pay $699+shipping for any cabinet in the first place..

I'd love to hear feedback on the 410. Anyone picked one up yet?

The first HD410 I've received is still in the box unfortunately. I hope to break that out sometime this coming week. No sales yet on the HD410, but that's not too surprising. I've never sold a lot of Berg 410's (more folks go ga-ga for the smaller cabs).

I'll try to report on this sooner rather than later...

I'd like to know how the HD410 stacks up against your modded NV610 tonally. ;)

:D

God Bless, Ray

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with 2 Berg 1-12s vs a 212? I am using a "bigbox" 2X12 Berg prototype, and I am hesitant to think that two small 1-12 cabs would have the same low end.

Here's the 2X12 on top of an HT310

Nice rig! I have an older HT212 and a couple of HT310's, and before the IP series came along, my HT212/HT310 stack (driven by one of a variety of preamps feeding a Crest CA9) was my ultimate "big rig." They really sound great together.

If you are talking two of the older HT112's, then no, they won't have as much low end as the HT212. But if you fast-forward to the HD line, then two HD112's should have just as much low end as the HD212, and definitely more than what you are getting out of the HT212.

Tom - You're specifically talking about the original HT112, rather than the HT112ER, which I believe you (and Karl) said has a similar low end response to the HD112, right? Just clarifying...thanks!

There was a thread on this Board about how two AE112s compared to an AE 212 . The consensus was that the two rigs were different sounding with the AE212 being smoother with more low end ; the reason for the difference was more than one tweeter in the AE212 vs 2 tweeters in the 2xAE112s. It had a lot to do with the design of the cabinet of the AE212 and the crossover.
Although the HD Series is different than the AE Series, I suspect that two HD 112s would sound different than an HD 212 , but perhaps someone who has compared the two rigs can weigh in.

I believe that Jim did intentionally voice the AE212 to sound a little different than two AE112's. However, I also believe that the HD212 should sound an awful lot like two HD112's. That being said, based upon my previous experience with 2x12's and "matching" 1x12's, I do think that there are some differences to be heard between the two. Whether or not those differences will be heard in the mix is a different question.

Hi, I bought the single HD12.. first of all, the cabinet arrived within 1.5 days of ordering from Rocket Music.. that's amazing. I love the cabinet. I stack beneath my HT112.. I realize sonically, these two are different.. with the new HD cabinet.. I get more "crunch" and definition.. There's also more low end.. I used an EX112S before on the bottom. I wish I could have TWO HD112s.. but I Am just playing covers. It's also a must , for me, to have separate cabs.. I cannot store a single 2x12 when in transit.. I am really impressed with the aggressiveness of the HD112.. it's more agressive than the HT112.. has more AMpegish edge, to me..
