New Carvin B1000

I never thought I'd see the day when 600w into a single 4 ohm cab wasn't enough. If you want to blow your cab up just pay a few extra bucks for the B2000.

;)

I regularly bridge my BX1500 into a single cab without blowing it up. There's this control called the Master Volume. ;)

This looks like a slightly newer, lightweight version of the well-regarded B800. However, the B1000 only has a single SpeakOn output jack, which makes it somewhat less useful when running in a 2-ohm configuration with two cabinets.

I don't know why Carvin couldn't reuse the dual-mode SpeakOn jacks which also accept 1/4-inch cables, as in the B2000. That would have made this amp nearly perfect.

Good thing I still have a spare B800, just in case my main one goes out. :)

Hi, could you clarify what the specific problem with a single SpeakOn output jack running in 2-ohm configuration with two or three cabinets would be?

I have a B800, which I love, and am considering upgrading to the B1000. I run two 8-ohm 2x10 Avatar cabinets but I also want the option off adding a third 8-ohm 2x10 cabinet for outdoor gigs or gigs with no PA support.

Why can't I just go out of the B1000 into cabinet 1, out of cabinet 1 into cabinet 2, and then out of cabinet 2 into cabinet 3. Of course the Avatars are wired in parallel so I can't see what the problem is. Could you walk me through it? Thanks.

Chaining in parallel isn't the problem, as long as your cabinets have two SpeakOn jacks. In my rig, my Acme cabinets only have a single SpeakOn jack each; in order to chain them from the cabinets, I would need to use their 1/4" or banana connectors, neither of which are an ideal option for me. Having cables that can't be pulled out accidentally has been a good thing.

Now that I think about it, my BX500 also has two dual-mode SpeakOn jacks. Why did Carvin not do this for the B1000? or the BX700?

Ah I see, thanks for the explanation. I was a bit worried.

I feel your pain and agree, the B1000 looks great but there are a few things missing. My B800 has dual speakons, can't see they would make a "new" amp and actually remove useful features.

I'm also kind of stumped on why they removed the clip lights. The B800 has both a pre-amp clip indicator and a power-amp clip indicator; both of which I find very useful. The B1000 has neither. Only a "protect" mode indicator; which is far less useful. :atoz:

I'm looking at the B1000 pic in the catalog. There's a clip light on the left near the pad (active/passive switch). I'd take that to be the usual input clip indicator. The protect light is at the right near the power switch. That'd be the power amp clip, yeah?

I'm tempted... Looked at the EQ points on the web page, and those are right where I've always liked them to be...

Edit: Weird. The printed catalog has a front panel pic with an input clip light. The pic on the webpage doesn't show it.

It could be that the dual mode speakon jacks are no longer available (they went away on the MB200) so they are giving the player a choice of modes but the tradeoff is one of each. Not a good decision.

One thing I will say about my BX500. It's very versatile, but when the knobs are all set "flat", the tone is pretty sterile. In particular, it seems bass-shy. In my experience, you really need those knobs to make it "pop". You have to work a bit for your reward.

I'd be hesitant to let that control go. But I suppose it all depends on how they've done the flat-level voicing, and what the tuning frequencies for the "sub-bass", "bass", and "low-mids" are.

I tend to prefer amps that I can just center everything and get a good baseline (not bassline :)), and then tweak from there.

Yep, indeed.

I hit the Carvin web page to see where the EQ center freqs are, on the B1000. Here are the specs. FWIW, that's where I'd like them to be, pretty much.
