Double Bass New EA VL208?

The proto 208 had real potential. It sounded great but bottomed out too easily. We are currently working with eminence on a newer, larger magnet. John is very demanding about the components that he uses. We will amke sure that the drivers are exactly what you need beforewe release a cabinet. Patience, please ...

A little greatest hits revival. I've had some bass playing colleagues lusting over my cabs and quite disturbed that they can't get one.

I expect the 8" neo drivers should be available sometime this summer. Prototypes will be made if the driver meets our requirements. The decision to market the NM-208 will be based upon dealer reaction at the Trade shows.

This was posted more than a year ago. In that time I've seen very few VL 208's for sale on Ebay or Talkbass and those that have sold are $1000. Used. In less than 48 hours.

I'd say that is a successful cab with great enough demand that it could be made and done so profitably. Pick your price point. From where I sit there is money left laying on the table. I'm puzzled by the thinking that one must retool something that works so well. Apparently the new prototypes aren't. Why not sell what does?

Really, the weight of the VL208 is fine. The VL 210 is to heavy but that's not the cab we are asking for.

I still have and gig my pair of VL-208 cabs- jeez, seeing that price on eBay I ought to sell 'em!! :hyper:

Maybe not.

Just got off the phone with Larry at EA, they've got a new driver candidate for the new 208, so sometime in the future, if it passes the EA John test, I'll get a chance to beat it up and compare it to my own VL208s. Any "reissue" will not be a repeat of the original VL208, it will be a smaller, lighter, NL-210 type cab with eights instead.

If it doesn't absolutely kill the VL208 they will have shot themselves squarely in the toes.

Frankly, my standard of testing when I got one will be: Would I be willing to trade my two original VL-208 cabs for a pair of the new ones?

As much I like mine, I do tweak them ever so slightly by rolling off a tiny bit of bass at the amp, and have the speakers' midrange and tweeter controls set at about 2 o'clock.

Well, I didn't want to believe that the NL-210 would best my beloved VL-210's, but guess what? I sold my VL-210's... :eek:

I am reserving judgment until I hear a new 2x8 that satisfies John. Until then, I will continue to greedily hoard my VL-208's! :D

Well I for one ain't gunna parse the thing before it has arrived. If it sounds anywhere in the neighborhood of the VL208 I heard I'll be saving my pennies. These guys at EA have got musical ears, and while most of their stuff is for the bread and butter (BG) market, the R&D they seem to be putting into this cab is much appreciated.

Yes, spoke w/EA last week, they're narrowing down driver characteristics, but the cabinet is pretty much set. According to Larry, once they're happy I'll get some time to contrast/compare it to the VL208s I own, beat it up, and render my thumbs up or down. I'm looking forward to it, also curious to see how light it is. The latest NM410 cab is, at 65lbs., lighter than the VL210 was!
