my 2 cents (and probably worth even less)

a) Hearing friends and co-workers over the years, talking about "One day, I'd like property, not just a house in suburbia!" Then, they get it (acreage, or second home). Within a matter of a few short years, it's always the same. "Now that I have property, I'm sick of taking care of it!!!! (maintenance)" Don't buy a lake house, rent one, once or twice a year. Not a time - share, a rental agreement.

b) Could never imagine $12k for an electric bass, it is just wood and wire. I am sure it is the one and only, but that is a lot of salad. If I won a lottery or inheritance, I could see paying close to that for a DB... however, it would have to be exceptional: feel, sound, looks, etc. and playing one note would really have to warm my feelers, like nothing ever has. Plus, hold it's value.

Seems you and the wife might need more time to think about this.

Get the lake house you both will enjoy and find a way to fund your dream bass, perhaps sell other bass(es) or other gear. Y'all ought to be able to come to some agreement and neither lose your dreams.

This is no contest: house. A house, among other things, is a pretty solid investment. A bass is not.

I saw this on youtube the other day and it was the law of diminishing returns as it applies to basses. It went something like this:
$100 vs $200 bass = 100% improvement in quality
$200 vs $400 bass = 50% improvement in quality
$400 vs $800 bass = 25% improvement in quality
$800 vs $1600 bass= maybe 15% improvement in quality

You get the picture? (imho) once you hit the $1600 mark, the improvement in quality become very minimal.

It's not a $12000 bass - at the very least, he'll have to fork out another $6K in the divorce proceedings to keep it. So, it's at least an $18K bass.

Still cheaper than a lake house.
