Hi, my name's Mike. Been a member since Sept. 2000. I started on saxophone MANY years ago and shortly thereafter, while listening to Chicago and Three Dog Night (early '70s), I wondered what that awesome low sound was! I finally discovered the electric bass (thanks, Pete Cetera!). I'm sure I'd heard it long before that - the bass riff in Four Tops' tunes, etc. - you know - Jamerson! Being a little kid, I probably thought it was a bass drum or something. Anyway, I just wanted to be part of that "foundation". We had an classical acoustic guitar at home, so I detuned the bottom 4 strings one octave! I'd rest my ear against the body and play bass notes with it. Later I picked up a used funny-looking Guild bass. Awesome. ;) Anyway - been doing it off and on for about 28 years now - mostly self-taught, but with a year of lessons in the middle.

After finishing high school, I spent quite a few years doing the "career" thing in engineering, so was not doing much music - but always wished to. Finally in the past year or so (at middle age) I've gotten more heavily back into it.

Because I've always been interested in technical things, in TalkBass I spend most of my time in the Amps forum. But musically, I just listen to tunes I like (mostly funk, soul, and jazz, but other things, too). When my band decides to tackle something challenging, I gulp and step up to the plate. (It's amazing what you can learn to do if you just assume you'll be able to do it eventually, rather than talk yourself out of it ahead of time.) It's a lot of fun! While I've spent more years playing saxophone (and have more formal training in it), I actually enjoy bass more. It's so cool to provide a foundation that sets the stage for everyone else in the band to really make great music. I'm not really into showy/flashy, in-the-spotlight bass styles much. Anyway, that's just me.

Check out my profile for furthers, and if you dig cool amplifier tech talk, look at some of my posts.

I like this thread, basically because I guess I must be nosey.

I'm Stu ! I've been around for a while but don't do an awful lot of posting. I've been playing Bass since I was 13, that's 25 nearly 26 years. I've been in several bands over that time and spent about 10 years earning a living from playing Keyboard and Bass in club bands in the North East of England (UK). After which I got really fed up and went back to my roots as it were, and played what I still call Heavy Rock, my influences are Jack Bruce, Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee and anyone else who I hear that makes me go wow ! Like Stanley, Jaco etc..

It's taken me the 25 years that I've been playing to be able to afford a Fender American Jazz Bass and shortly when the order comes through, an Ashdown MAG rig. So when I see the amount of gear in people's profiles I really wonder how on earth can players afford all this good quality equipment, they must spend all they earn on it. Mind I don't think that top of the range gear can make you a better player, there is I believe no replacement for long hours of practice.

btw, I may be 38 but I still love rocking the night away at gigs and in my head I'm still 17, and with my new band I feel a lot of my teenage arrogance returning, you know....We are the best band etc etc..yawn yawn... :0)

This is a great forum.

My name's Eric and I've been playing bass for 2 weeks. I'm 23 and I've never played any other instrument. I briefly considered the guitar, but I decided that decent guitarists are a dime a dozen. I always pick out bass lines in songs and get quite frustrated with boring ones. I've often heard, "If you think they're so bad, why don't you try playing?" So I did. ;P

I love this site and I've already learned a ton. I look forward to contributing when I have more experience under my belt.

Hi,

I´m David and I´m not so new to Talkbass but anyways..

I play bass for about 1 1/2 years, and by now I own a Sadowsky 4, my old J-Copy and an ESH 4 String. My main influences are Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted and Flea...

I live in Germany and I play in a Rock `n Roll Band. It´s really a rock and roll band, we want to be THE rebirth of the good old rock `n roll times, and we want to be better then all those punk / metal / hardcore or whatever bands, because we play music that is very different. If you want, head over to our homepage and listen to it: Invalid Link Removed
I know I´m not on because I´m in the band for about 1 Month.

I like funky, more complicated bass lines, not only playing G for 4 eights, then E for 4 Eights and then A for 8 Eights. Listen to "Let Go" for proof...

For anyone living in Germany or anyone traveling to Bonn, we`re playing live at a band contest (price: A full CD Production) at the 7th of May.

Right now, I´m trying to get a bit into that slapping thing, just bought a pretty good book about it.

Hello all, I just signed up today.

My real name's Joohoon and I've only been playing bass for about 2 months. I'm 27 and I played violin from when I was 5 until 18, when I just kinda burned out on it. I've always loved all kinds of music and I've always loved the sound of bass guitar, don't know why exactly.

So a few months ago as I sat in front of the tv, I swear I could literally feel my brain cells dying ;) and I decided I needed to get off my *ss and start doing something creative again. Well I've always wanted to play the bass, so I went down to Manny's and picked up a mim fender jazz and a practice amp and started taking lessons.

Now I can honestly say that I am completely hooked! I've been practicing every chance I get and I really like my teacher. I can't say that my girlfriend is thrilled with me plucking away at all hours of the day, but oh well, at least she is deep sleeper :).

Anyway, I am psyched to have found this place. Seems like a laid-back and informative site.

Hey, my name is Tim. I've been playing bass for 13 years, which has been hard to keep any band situation for very long because I am also a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Not to mention the fact that I have a wife and three teenage kids that also keep me busy. Oh well, that's pretty much it, I'm pretty much a gear freak too(I really dig Spectors) and I really like alternative rock.

Hi

I first started playing classical piano when I was 12 and I still do now at nearly 18yrs of age. I started to learn bass at the age of 16, maybe because I wanted to rebel and I started getting bored with piano. Transfering from piano to bass wasn't that hard. I just took the theory priciples from the piano and applied them to bass.
I would say I am better than average at my current status, but there is definitaley room for improvment.

I play in a band, which is constantly splitting up and rejoining (damn guitarists!!!).

I plan to make music as a career but with the intense competition I don't think it will happen.

Ok, ok....I wasn't thinking when I picked my name...give me a break, I am just a girl..hehehe
Anyways, wanted to say hey,i'm new to TB. I've been playing over 4 years, country, bluegrass, rock but am truly a metalhead from way back. Getting ready to start looking for some new bandmates.
That should keep me out of trouble for a while anyways. So, thats a little bit about me.

Well although my alias may be Dave, or lildave or anything along the lines that people call me my real name is Chris. I've beenplayin for oh well just about 2 years now. I got into bass because 2 years ago I was fighting withthis kid about who was gonna play bass first. Ha well I told my mom that I wanted to play although I never really knew what it was, I had played the violin, sax piano but ya know I didn't know what a bass was. So one day I came home and there it is my first bass. Squier P-bass with a Peavey MicroBass. Ha I'm playing the bass now actually, although I have my Godin BG-V that I got used for like $350... I love the sound of this thing, almost a hollow sound haha. Well anyways back to the story, I came home and i was like 'WOAH, *** is that?' haha. Yea being cocky and 14 isn't a good combo either, and since all of my friends now play bass instead of guitar its more annoying then cool. It's like a 2:1 bassist guitar player in my school, also I've been told that I'm the best which i find sad because well ha I'm a dufus. I'm with my band Reinhardt now, and we're on our webpage www.twinklestick.com . If you deicde to go, then the first thing you'll see is Stew, our singer. Well anyways I talk like I know what I'm saying so most of what I say isn't true.. haha Ok I'm off
