Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

Further impressions on the brightness of the string after some more playing. It seems to have less of the high high end compared to a Spiro but fills out a little more in the mid section. Since these sit right with me sonically pretty much out of the box, i am very curious how they will sound in 6 months of regular playing. Will they retain this nice character or get real thumpy? Time will tell.

About to head to my gig, but noticed these have a slight front end "click" a la Evah's which is pretty satisfying. Not sure if others have noticed that or if it is just me/my bass setup. I think i like these strings enough that even if they die out in a year i would be willing to keep buying fresh sets.

i hear a ping sometimes and sometimes not. The things I love is the growl on the E string and the ommph behind the G string.

I would change spiros every year regardless so thats all I need from them. With a spiro set reaching around $300 (with an extension string) and these only $220 its an easy choice.

It settled down greatly for me. Still always there but now it’s more tameable. But I always want to hear that growl on my E so I personally like it

I like some growl on the E string as well, but not that much.
I’m not very patient with strings.

all: these strings are getting great reviews. i would love to hear opinions on how they compare to superflexblies. less tension, feel, etc. im thinking about changing from superflexblies to these strings. Your comments would really be appreciated.

Less tension meaning more flexible. Stronger E string in comparasion to the rest. No overly large D string (doesn’t bother a lot of people but annoyed me) I think they broke in faster than superflexibles and perps have a more steel string sound. Supers felt and sounded semi plastic to my ear and on my bass

Think about your sound and feel of your now. Is it at least 90% what you want? yes? keep playing. No? Think about what you want and test some sets. The spiros were about 80% there for me. I wanted lighter tension and a little more brightness, but not as light as spiro weich. I tried these and it worked out.

thanks for the advice. now im thinking a out these for my Kay bass. Would use in a big band a d perhaps in a string orchestra. Just not sure yet.

Hello from Norway!
Put the strings on on tuesday - due to long-lasting neck/shoulder issues both me and my bass are a bit rusty - but I really like the strings so far. They replaced Daddario Zyex medium(which I also like a lot); IMHO the Perpetuals have a more complex sound in comparison, more woody but still with enough growl and top end. Looking fwd to my first gig in a month or two.

Did you find that the Perpetuals feel softer than the Zyex strings?

In my opinion yes, a good indication is that I had to turn the adjusters a couple of turns (all the way) to compensate for the lower tension. I dont geel they are too loose though.

Good, because the tension is what I didn’t like about Zyex. If they sound as good, I’m interested.

I rent out my hybrid bass periodically to an out of town bassist who performs and records with a local friend. He always takes good care of my bass, but he seems to be a “string-killer”. The synthetic core strings I used on this bass would always be a lot duller when I got the bass back from him. I know he uses Spirocores on his bass and changes them every six months. He said he liked the Perpetuals that are on the bass now, but after I got it back from him the strings were noticeably more subdued. I was expecting them to retain their initial brightness a lot better than the synthetic core strings, but maybe any string would sound that way after he plays them extensively for several days.

heavily clean them with alcohol and see if that helps. I'm not changing these to try anything else because I want to see the life of them. I think the 13th of september will be 3 months. They are still plenty bright and alive right now. They've settled in nicely in the same place. not much change in the sound for the past month. The first month they changed a good bit by mellowing out. We shall see...
