Friday night's gig was pretty good. We got started a little late. We were supposed to go on around 11:30, we didn't start until just after midnight. New Year's struck during the changeover between bands and it was a little anti-climactic... The show was pretty good. Crowd was a bit thin towards the end of the night, we took a long time between songs... but the actual playing of music was great! I borrowed a friend's 15" cab and had my own 12" and the MB500 head (finally running at the full 500 watts!). that rig SLAMS...
Saturday night... not quite so good... 1st band didn't show. 2nd band got started and the guitarist/singer forgot the pickup for her acoustic, they decided to take a "set break" until someone fetched her another guitar. great... 3rd band gets started pretty late. they are loud. very loud. the guitarist has his 2x12 marshall on blast in a small club... the soundman turns him down after the first song, but they are still screaming loud and... well... this was supposedly a reggae night, and they were a slightly reggae influenced hard rock band. there were about 25 or 30 people there before they went on. there were 5 people there when they finished. we get ready to take the stage and i find out that while our drummer was told he could use the previous band's drum kit... they left right after their set and took it with them. so... we are on 30 minutes late again, we have 3 congas, a snare drum, a woodblock, and the bottom of a stool to share between our drummer and percussionist... to play for an empty room. there were more of us in the band than in the crowd. still fun to play music with these guys, the band is great and i'm lucky to play with such talented folks. and a good exercise for me holding a steady groove down with no kick drum. but needless to say--no crowd, no pay.
so i can't say it was the new year's eve double-gig weekend of my dreams. but like i said, i'm a lucky guy to be playing music with these guys... it was the best of all possible outcomes given the situations we were handed.
