New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Until I have the bandwidth to fully assess the B3n, below are my initial impressions after having received it. ;)

Cheers!

I enjoy reading your reviews and opinions Charlie. This is the most concise statement I've seen from you. Looking forward to some more in-depth posts.

Yeah... @bpc apology accepted. LOL. Please don't edit your initial post. It makes me look wicked smaaaht.

I'm annoyed about the lack of USB audio and XLR outputs in direct proportion to the cost of the unit. If I'm spending south of $300, I'm not so bothered. If I'm spending north of $500, I'm more bothered. If I'm spending north of $1000, I'm pretty miffed. FWIW, the Atomic Amplifire $599, Fractal Audio AX8 pedal $1299, and Kemper profiling amp $1799 are all missing the USB audio feature. Zoom is not unique. I'd rather have a B5n with USB audio, so I can replace my B3 and my G5n in one swoop, but no dice.

Not that I agree with Zoom on the lack of XLR, but they probably figured that the vast majority of users wouldn't necessarily need an XLR output, since they'll be mostly weekend warriors, bedroom players, beginners, or simply able to connect the way they want to (and XLR isn't part of that scheme). Those that really need the XLR interface can either add the extra interface or just not buy the unit. Oh well...can't please everyone. How about XLR and USB Audio for +$150? How would you feel then?

Same here for sure. It's part of Zoom's coordinated strategy. Behold:

ME: Hey guys I'm into playing bass again.

ZOOM: Sweet. We just came out with B1on.

ME: Sweet! In for one.

ME: Nuts. I can't gig with the B1on. Needs more footswitches.

ZOOM: Here, have a B3. We know it's a little dated but people love it.

ME: Sweet! In for one. I'll just solder in an external patch selection footswitch. This is great!

ZOOM: Glad you like it. Hey look here's a B3n with new DSP and more effect slots.

ME: Sweet! In for one. Golly I sure wish it did USB and XLR.

ZOOM: Glad you like it. Now that you've bought pretty much everything else we sell let's talk about that B5n...

Funny...but...the B1on came out AFTER the B3.

IIRC, it was: MS60B (bought and sold...wanted more switches), then B3 (bought and still use), then the B1on (own, don't use much), and now the B3n (being shipped to me now, likely to replace B3).

Zoom is on record as saying there simply isn't enough demand for bass pedals to warrant introducing a B5n. meh...bullcrap! If the sales figures of the B3/B1on/MS60B weren't enough to show Zoom that there is a healthy bass multi-fx market, then what can you say? I know the B3 was a very well-liked, high selling item for a lot of online gear vendors.

At least Zoom DID make a move to improve the quality of the modeling and cab sims, and give us more slots with the B3n. It looks like Zoom is pretty much done with producing a bass pedal that has more switches and a bigger footprint, like the G5n. Oh well. We lose.

The days of Zoom hiding behind that tired excuse are very numbered as more and more are realizing that the solution and future is universal, cross-instrument hardware.

Produce the 3 product form factors that are the G3n, G3Xn, and G5n and give users the ability to download the effect models of their choosing on them.

My latest prediction is that the start of this utopia will be the successor to the recently discontinued MS-100BT. ;)

Got it. Very cool box. Some new effects and an Acoustic amp and cab available thru Guitar Lab. I'm confused about the Ampeg 8x10 cab. I would like just the cab, not a miced cab but if I turn the mics down there's not much left. It seems the bottom control is just bass not the cabinet or am I wrong here? It definitely is bottom heavy turned up. Any thoughts on this?

Congrats! B&H doesn't mess around with their 1-day shipping, huh? 53 minutes left to make up my mind...
