NFL 2018 Superbowl LIII

While reading an article about why the Rams barely played Gurley in the Super Bowl, this stat jumped out at me....
a first-team All-Pro back still hasn't won the Super Bowl this century, and only three of this century's 19 Super Bowl-winning teams had a Pro Bowl back on their roster.

There is much speculation about why Gurley didn't get more carries.

There is general agreement that McVay screwed the pooch from start to finish with his bad game plan. Giant face plant.

I saw that Cooks play a couple times and, as Romo said at the time, he couldn’t bring his left hand up for the catch because one of the defenders was holding that arm. It should have been Rams ball at the 1.

Not nearly as egregious as the Saints/Rams uncalled PI, of course, and the best they could do there was tie it up, but still...
It's one of the reasons I absolutely hate Brady and the Patriots. If there's an iffy call that can benefit them, it happens. It's just one of those things.

As far as tinfoil hats, I don't think there's much likelihood that the Patriots were stealing anything. They were just better prepared when push came to shove. They used their opportunities just enough and the Rams didn't. I still can't stand 'em and will not watch any game involving the Patriots or Brady.

I'd say "Don Meredith for President" but that's a dead issue.

Loved that guy's on-air performance. He was GREAT!!

For the halftime show, I was glad it was Maroon 5 rather than either of those other goofs who had cameo appearances. Maroon 5 was just totally "meh," the others were of no use at all.
As long as we are on Dandy Don and hits.

Bednarik didn't mean to separate Merideth from himself permanently, although that's essentially what happened. Bendarik was also the last 60 minute player, did it as a center/linebacker, and wore a single bar because he had to wear a facemask. It was certainly a different era. I doubt if Bednarik could have done what he did these days, because the specialists are so good at what they do. That said, guys like Brady would wilt if they ever got hit by a guy like him.

That's one thing if the league doesn't want to talk about it, but censoring what other companies want to say about it is not cool.

Agreed.

The league had to change, or people would be dead on the field.

They almost were. The players didn't live that long after football, either. I think it still needs to change more - eliminate free substitutions and all the pads. That would go a long way toward lowering the average weight of players, which would then lower the energy involved in collisions. Make them play without pads and the techniques would adapt to avoid head to head contact for the most part.

I agree with the substitution elimination, but players are just getting too big and too fast (the speed is as much to blame), no matter what you do. Ken Bowman, center for Vince Lombardi's Super Bowl Packers, weighed under 210. Most kickers are heavier than that now.

There is no way that a 300 pound man who can run a sub 5-second 40 should be allowed to armor up and hit people at full gallop. Those guys would still be big, fast, and strong, but it would go back to 250 being a big, big player. That's plenty big enough.

By no subs, I assume you mean make 'em play both offense and defense? All for that.

Yes. And without pads, the injuries would be shoulders and immediate instead of brains and long term. For the most part. There will always be issues with heads. I have the stitches from rugby to prove that, but you just can't lay out without a helmet like you can with full armor. I broke a plastic facemask and several chinstraps as a kid. My brother cracked a helmet shell. That kind of violent hitting was encouraged at the time. That kind of head on collision has to have made both of us dumber. We should not be doing that on purpose to young people.

Yep, I'm with you. I still remember the leather helmet my dad used when he played at Yale (class of '33). No facemask of course. As kids my brother and I played tackle pickup games with no pads or helmet all the time. Oh wait...maybe that's why I became a bass player!
