Brees is the greatest pure quarterback I've ever seen, that's for sure. If he'd played for a team that had a less underachieving defense, more people would be talking about him this way. Not only that, but he's that rare superstar who also seems to be a person of character... if he'd been a foot taller, he couldn't played center for the Spurs!
That's what I've been saying. At least I'm not utterly alone in that observation, and you're not going to be seen as a "homer"....

Oh, I know I'm temptin' fate there...which is why my initial comment was "Would ripping off 18 in a row...". Do I think they will? Dunno, but maybe? Fun to think about, especially as a Saints fan, which is a fun place to be right now.
And, yeah, winning 17 straight is incredibly difficult. As winning 18 straight would be (ask the Pats). And, no, really, it wouldn't take anything away from the '72 Dolphins, but opening up a bottle of champagne with the surviving team members each time an undefeated team loses a game is pretty goofy...

I knew he was going to be a bust out of the gate. I semi-follow NCAA football, and am almost an LSU fan, so I was aware of Russell, and his...well...attitude...from a few years of watching him at the college level. Typical of a lot of college athletes, he was able to get by on sheer physical prowess for the 4 years he was in college, but you could tell he wasn't going to go far once he was at the next level, because he was not the hard-work type.
Only 1 in 1000 (probably even fewer) college level guys make it to the NFL, so you better bring all of your marbles to the table, or you will not last long (and a bunch of 'em don't). You will be competing with the best of the best, you might come up against a player of that caliber in NCAA football every few games, but in the NFL ALL of the guys on the field are that good - or they're not there for long. Your "A" game ain't enough, and even your "A+" game might not get the job done.
I also thought that the guy in my avatar was going to do well at the next level from the little bit I'd seen of him at Purdue, you could see he was one of those "give it everything at every level" guys...then he ended up on my hometown team with a coach that "got" him, and now look. He never had the physical abilities of a Russell or Leaf or Tebow, but he had that attitude of "whatever I have to do to be successful at this", and it paid off. To be successful in the NFL you must be an overachiever at all aspects of your life, not just have the physical talent. As a matter of fact, that dude in the avatar proves that even if you don't exactly have the physical tools and talent deemed "required", but you have the right attitude and drive, you can still succeed - but the physical ability alone isn't even close to enough.
You're a full on LSU fan when they beat Florida, but I certainly understand the ho hum attitude this year buddy.
But hey, I threw out a shout out for Death Valley (not the one in Clemson) as the ultimate college football experience in the NCAA Football thread recently. I experienced it on a Saturday night in 2009.

I can mostly agree with this, although Joe Montana may be it for me. Montana is probably the first QB I remember as being uber awesome.
On a side note regarding NFL QB's, one of the local sports radio stations here in town does a weekly show with Mike Holmgren, which I love to listen to. This morning they were discussing all the different NFL QB's Mike coached or coached against. That was a really cool interview listening to him tell stories about Montana, Young, Favre, and others.

Yeah, I remember Montana well. I was thinking of Steve Young when I thought of a quarterback who Brees reminds me of in terms of insane accuracy. No doubt Montana was one of the greats and also belongs in this discussion!

I haven't really followed NCAA ball much the past 5-6 years now, just don't have the space in my life for 2 full days of football, and I'm far more a Saints/NFL guy than an LSU/NCAA guy. When I can, I'll watch college ball, but pretty much any other activity will take precedence. NFL, however, unless I just flat can't avoid missing it, I'm there, and trying to watch all of the games.
Now, the tailgate thing...if I still lived in BRLA (I did from 1997-2000), I'd have to say I'd be more inclined to making sure I made it to those games, because that is the best parking lot in football.
Meanwhile, here in the Denver area the main debate is whether the coach gets fired now or after the season. It's getting monotonous. The team played a good game yesterday and a kick went wide at the end. I'm not sure how you blame the coach for a 50+ yard kick that goes wide right.
Maybe because they think the game should not have come down to one play?

I'd think mcmanus has enough goodwill built up that one off game doesn't get him canned. That's be a pretty poor reflection on the organization. That coach, though... not one of Elway's better moves. They are wasting a lot of good talent on that team.

He damn near bounced it of the side of Kerryon Johnson's head when they were running downfield for it to get swept up and returned for a TD. They replay should have been shown in black and white at a faster speed with circus music playing. It was that comical.

You are really selling Brees short with this comment.
Brees set all kinds of Big-10 (at the time) records, some of which still stand, and a couple NCAA records. It's not like he was some underdog who snuck on to an NFL roster.
Brees has all the skill and talent required to be where he is today.
