NFL 2018 Week #9

You are really selling Brees short with this comment.
Brees set all kinds of Big-10 (at the time) records, some of which still stand, and a couple NCAA records. It's not like he was some underdog who snuck on to an NFL roster.
Brees has all the skill and talent required to be where he is today.

-Mike

I think I either was unclear, or at least not fully understood - he has the physical skills, the important part of my comment was "talent deemed 'required'". He had the talent, but he didn't fit the prototypical "NFL QB" mold - 6'4", 230 lbs, etc, etc, etc...he was "too short" and so on...the "mold" is stupid, however, and he is proof of it.

Brees is by all accounts a great person as well as a great QB.

I know several people that have had interactions with him, and all of the anecdotes support this.

He lives in NOLA, in a really nice part ("Uptown"), but not in a gated community or anything, just a nice house in a nice neighborhood. He is known for going out walking around with his family just like any other resident, and is well-liked by everyone in the neighborhood, and not just because he's "DREW BREES!!!".

One story I'm privy to:

My sister's ex went to his dentist back in late summer of 2010, when he walked in, he noticed there was only one other person in the waiting room. As he walked across the room to sign in for his appointment, he recognized the other person in the room...walked up to the receptionist's desk, and said "is that....?". The receptionist said "Yes, it is.". The ex-bro-in-law then took a deep breath, walked across the room, greeted the individual thusly:

"Drew, I'm sure you are constantly bombarded with people pestering you about all kinds of things. I don't want to be 'that guy', but I do want to thank you for everything you've done since you got here - both on and off the field. It really means so much to all of us."

The guy in question, who had just won the Super Bowl MVP award several months earlier, replied:

"Thanks! Hey, wanna try it on?" (hands my ex-bro-in-law his brand-new Super Bowl ring - and YES, the ex-bro-in-law has a photo of himself wearing the ring with Drew standing next to him)

THAT is Drew Brees. And, he also happens to be at least a viable candidate for GOAT at his position in the NFL. He's definitely one of the nicest guys to do so.

I have a couple neat Drew Brees stories from my time in NOLA following Hurricane Katrina for disaster relief work.
Dude is not afraid to pick up some power tools and do the grunt work, that's for sure.

If you want to talk hometown teams, did you see any of the lowlights from the lions game? Double digit sacks on stafford and he had one of the worst tosses to an RB that I've ever seen. He damn near bounced it of the side of Kerryon Johnson's head when they were running downfield for it to get swept up and returned for a TD. They replay should have been shown in black and white at a faster speed with circus music playing. It was that comical.

S.O.L (Same Old Lions)
Speaking of the Lions, I greatly enjoyed this well-deserved bit of mockery. Poor Posture: Detroit News headline trolls Matt Patricia, Lions after rough loss to Vikings
Patricia basically dressed like a nu metal band member on the Pats sideline before he got the Lions job, now he wants to lecture others about respect and professionalism. Enjoy the headline, Coach.:D

So, 44-30 into week 9....let's get started:

TNF:

Raiders @ 49ers - Why? :rollno: Yet another primetime snoozefest between two teams going nowhere fast this year. Combination of Chucky's Comedy Tour and home field 3. Ray-duhs 17 Niners 20

Wow. Just....wow. Man, the Raiders are a BAD football team, and Chucky is managing to end up being even worse than I would have expected - and that's saying something, because I consider him to be a wreck of a head coach (he's a good OC, but he doesn't have the skill set to be a HC). W

Sunday Early Games:

Steelers @ Ravens - Could be good, could be not fun. Who knows. Both teams have been inconsistent, but the Ravens a bit more inconsistent. Still, home field 3, and Tucker redeems himself for the missed PAT 2 weeks ago. Steelers 20 Ravens 23

Well....the Ravens are falling apart now. Guess that loss to my boys in black & gold (not black & YELLOW, Steelers fans ;) ) 2 weeks ago just took the wind out of them... L

Bears @ Bills - Bills are finished for the year, the Bears aren't. Bears 31 Bills 10

The Bills...(shakes head)... W

Buccaneers @ Panthers - As much as I am hoping for FITZMAGIC!!! to show up, I just don't see it happening. This is one I will be happy to get wrong however. ;) Bucs 20 Panters 30

Yet again, the Panters get a weak opponent, dismantle them, and their fans start to believe they're going to be a contender. That will get rectified Thursday in Pittsburgh, but for now, this was exactly what I expected. W

Chiefs @ Browns - Well.....the Chiefs are still trying to figure out how to play defense, but they have that whole offense thing sorted just fine. No way the Browns keep up. Chiefs 42 Browns 27

Pretty much right where I expected this one to end. The Chiefs are rolling, until they run into a very stout defense, or an offense that can match them blow-for-blow, they will continue to do so. The matchup with the Rams in Mexico City in 2 weeks looms large here...looking forward to that one. W

Jets @ Dolphins - At least it isn't in prime time...to underachievers swinging rubber chickens at one another....home field 3. Jets 24 Dolphins 27

Rubber chickens indeed. Two teams going nowhere fast this season. W

Lions @ Vikings - Can't figure the Lions out...they embarass the Pats in prime time, then can't keep up with the Seahawks. Vikes...who knows, they should be the better team, but I have a funny feeling about this one after the Bills snuck up on them, and right after getting a spanking from NOLA last week...Lions 30 Vikes 27 (upset special)

I keep hoping that Matt Patricia and Stafford will find consistency...embarrass the Pats on MNF one week, crap in their drawers the next. This week, we did #2. (see what I did there?) L

Falcons @ Redskins - The Skins have just enough defense to slow down the Fails; the Fails have the Fails defense. Falcons 24 Redskins 31

Hrumpfh. This was more the Redskins offense coming to pieces than anything else. If the 28-3ers fans think otherwise, reality will be checking in soon enough to get that straight for them. L

Texans @ Broncos - Another team with the wheels going in 4 different directions, the Broncos won't keep up with the Texans. Texans 34 Broncos 17

Credit to the Broncos for making more of a game of this than I thought possible. That, or the Texans are just not as good as I was thinking...either way, neither team is a much of a threat to be in the post season. W

Chargers @ Seahawks - Interesting matchup, overachieverrs (Seahawks) at home against underachievers. Tough to pick, but going with upset #2 here, home field 3. Chargers 24 Seahawks 27

The Seahawks keep getting ALMOST good enough against quality opponents. They gotta go to LA and face a Rams team that is probably in a foul mood right now next week...that might not be pretty. That said, this one ended almost as expected. W

Rams @ Saints - Game of the week, and not just because I'm a Saints homer. This is the class of the NFC versus the class of the NFC - one of these teams is likely to be the NFC Champs, and this game is HUGE for seeding. Both teams have made moves in the past 2 weeks to shore up their defenses; both teams have brutal offenses (and, they had a double-digit win with less than 300 yards of total offense - this should scare every team in the NFC to death, because that is an aberration). This will be a slobber-knocker.

If the Saints defense can keep up their NFL leading rushing defense (yeah, I know, THE SAINTS?!?!?! ), and contain Gurley, they win. They will. But it will be tight, and set up a show-down in the post season - hopefully in NOLA, not El Lay.

Rams 27 Saints 31

Whew!

What a ride that was. Yes, I was cursing like a sailor in the 3rd quarter when the Saints took a 15 minute nap and gave up a 21 point lead. Then, it was like they woke up, and said "Hey, there's still a game on...let's end this!". And, BOOM - cue the ghost of Joe Horn (and, no, I don't really approve of what MT did, but hey, a bit of smartassery never hurt anyone - and the tip of his hat to a former Saints great was appreciated, as long as it didn't change the outcome).

The biggest surprise? The Saints pass defense at the end of the 4th quarter, especially PJ Williams on the Rams last drive shutting down Brandin Cooks on two consecutive plays (and the schadenfreude watching Cooks cry like a little girl after the 4th down incompletion was sweet!). The run defense was as advertised, and no one can claim they're not for real - they shut down Gurley pretty well, kept him to 68 yards rushing, despite a few very impressive runs (he's GOOD). As predicted, if they shut down Gurley, they win. They did, on both counts.

Frankly, despite the 3rd quarter swoon, they ended up looking better than I'd hoped. As an ESPN writer said:

"The Saints don't just beat you. They decide how you're going to be beaten."

Notice was served Sunday afternoon, let's see how the rest of the season plays out now. W

SNF:

Packers @ Patriots - The Packers are ALMOST a good team. The Pats are ALMOST as good as their fan base thinks they are. As much as I'd like an upset here, I don't see it, but the Pats fans will sweat this one to the end. Packers 30 Patriots 34

The Packers tried to make a game of it, but that wasn't going to work out well in Foxboro. Despite all the hype, Rodgers is one guy, and the Pats just have a much better TEAM than the Packers. W

MNF:

Titans @ Cowboys - Woof. Titans looked for real a month ago, but now, meh. The Cows are the definition of meh. Another prime time meh game, but meh versus meh means it could at least be semi-watchable. I think the Titans somehow find a way to wake up just enough. Titans 21 Cowboys 20

The Titans woke up a bit more than enough.

Can we say it now? The Cowboys are a mediocre team with a couple of good players here and there. I don't see them breaking .500 this year. They lack the leadership required to be a good team, and even their best players are out of control (yeah, I'm talking about Elliot...he's turning into a head-case, and because of a weak-ass coaching staff and out of control front office, no one is steering him back onto the path). This trainwreck of a team will not improve until Jerruh Jones goes away, or at least hires a competent GM and allows him to do his job.

As for the Titans winning, nice, but beating up on the class special needs kid doesn't make you a tough guy. W

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10-3 this week, 54-33 for the season. Starting to "feel it" a bit now. On to week 10!!! :hyper:

They still make sure everyone knows about it. I'm always amused. The Mariners still have a big ol' zero. My amusement doesn't last too long.

Oh yeah, they sure do.
You know how many Steeler fans it takes to change a light bulb?
Seven.
One to do it, then six to sit around and talk about how awesome the light bulb used to be.

Ah yes....ancient history (notice I'm not touting our SB history, which is still more recent than theirs ;) )

Naw, it's not like you have it as your avatar or anything. ;)
I wouldn't count going to the game once as a 'history' anyways. There are other teams who have lost more Super Bowls than your team has been to.
