It's the fundamentals. Gotta keep your head in the game. I'm guessing that play was scripted in the huddle, so all he wanted to do was get down there and be ready to score.
We see what happens when you don't pay attention.

A very stupid mistake. That said, future HOFer Von Miller looked to be offside on the next play (not called), so it happens.
Kinda sad watching Reid and Mahomes crying about the call.
During halftime of the PHI/DAL game, they interviewed former referee Terry McAulay. He acknowledged that penalty was not called much in the past, but across the NFL, it is being called more often. If what he said is true, and I don't have a reason to believe he made the stats up, the players and coaches are aware of the increased efforts to enforce that penalty. You blew it KC, stop crying.

Not a Chiefs or Bills fan necessarily but I get their beef. In the end the outcome of the game was decided by a referee.
There’s 272 games in a season and a newly flagged penalty that’s been called only 12 times this season, 15 total times in 3 seasons, isn’t some common occurrence everyone has been preparing around.
Yes, Toney was forward. But that’s a pretty selective call and there’s typically a warning. My opinion is any time an official directly changes the winner it’s a problem for the league. I’m sure they’ll fine Reid and Mahomes but I think they did the right thing to complain.
My team forced a fumble and made a clear recovery and the referee didn’t call it and would not review it today. It determined the winner. So I’m not feeling the least but of empathy for NFL refs today.
That's not the refs fault though. He has a job to do. The refs aren't perfect and the NFL has never put forth that they are. The players aren't either. This is why you eliminate variables that you can that will impact the game. Limit turnovers, penalties, etc.
You are right, the refs will give a warning in those situations when the player looks down the line to check. But Toney never looks down the line to check with the ref, which I attribute to him being so excited about his chance to score the winning TD that he failed to focus and concentrate on football fundamentals. It's the little things that count when you're this good.
It's why I'm always riding Mike Tomlin. The Steelers don't have terrible players who don't belong in the NFL, well maybe some, but they're losing because they're undisciplined and poorly coached.
A team should never put themselves in a position to let a ref decide if they win or lose. It cuts both ways, and I've been on both sides of this argument as you have as well.
I agree that it's a bummer the ref is the star at the end of the game, but KC had chances the other 59 minutes in that game not to be in that position. But they were in it and one of their players failed to stay focused. This was easily avoidable unlike a controversial fumble, completion, ball spot, etc.

Bengals seem to have new life, and it’s a joy to watch Browning mesh with the offense and keep the team alive and kicking.
9ers are just mowing people down at this point. By far my favorite team to watch this year. That much talent on both sides of the ball is almost ridiculous, but it’s a beautiful thing to watch when it’s clicking.
Got to watch the Cowboys’ game with my son last night. What a dismantling of an Eagles team that several weeks ago people were describing as unstoppable. My son asked me at one point, “dad, when have you ever pulled for the Cowboys before? I’ve never seen it.” All I could say was “ I have only pulled for that team when they played the Patriots with Brady, or the Bucs with Brady…or maybe, you know, any team with Brady”.

Lining up in the neutral zone has always been one of my biggest pet peeves. It's usually the defense, but there's really no excuse for it.
Yes, I'd like to see more consistency in making the call, but the ref was absolutely right in Toney's case. When somebody on a team I'm rooting for does it, I get quite irritated. Not at the ref, but at the knucklehead who can't figure out the alignment of the hash marks and the ball. Unlike pass interference, holding, etc. which are often more subjective, being lined up in the neutral zone is pretty cut and dry.

Yes, that should be called whether it's the first play of the game or the last. Talk about the refs deciding the game by calls in the last two minutes never hold much water for me. Refereeing is sketchy throughout the game...deal with it.
Everyone fusses about the refs, but have you ever considered the job they are trying to do? You have 4 guys trying to watch 22 big fast men over a huge area, without slow-mo, replay, or multiple angles. How easy is it for the back judge to go right and the play go left? All those nice things the armchair refs have at their disposal along with biased announcers telling them how bad the call was. If you really want accurate refereeing, they would need to put 4 more refs in a booth with huge monitor and access to every camera angle. Add 30 secs between each play to allow for instant replay review. No more hurry up offense, no more quick snaps, no more 2 min drill. Add 3-4 hours to the game and reduce Sunday to only 2 games not 3. Likely add a "No Call" challenge like the XFl or USFL has as well.
That’s all true and valid. And it’s also true that same ref had 58 minutes to throw that same flag. And 13 other games this year to throw it.
I am the first one to say even to youth players “you can take the referee call you disagree with out of the equation by playing better the whole game”.
But it’s still a bad look when the zebra decides who wins.
Toney has cost the Chiefs some points this year already. Not making excuses for him.
