NFL Off Season

Jay Terrien said:
Does anyone else think that Green Bay should have picked up a veteran quarterback, maybe taken a run at Drew Brees before New Orleans got him?

I don't really think so. I'm not the most knowledgeable about football, but with the Packers line-up as shaky as it is, and after Favre is gone I think it would be a good idea to start with a promising younger guy and see where he can take the team. It could result in some real shaky years, but I think it's time to move forward and I'd almost rather see a young guy take a stab at the pros in Green Bay. Of course I'm no analyst, just my thoughts.

You guys really make me laugh.

How many of you have been to two Super Bowls, won one, won three MVP's and are sitting on the cusp of every single NFL QB record?

Oh yeah, easy decision to just say, "I'll just walk away from all that."

Largent went to how many Super Bowls? Bettis won how many MVP's? Good for him (and I mean that) that he could retire (ala John Elway) after finally winning a Super Bowl.

There isn't one single pro player who is in Favre's shoes. How many players would be so quick to make a decision with so many records within possibly one more season of obtaining? He could come back for just those alone...but that still might not be enough incentive. He has more than enough money, so money isn't even reason enough. Troy Aikman even said he understands how tough it is to make this kind of decision...and he wrestled with his retirement as well...and mostly because of how the Cowboys were not doing whatever they could to be the best (and Aikman won more Super Bowls and wasn't even close to Favre's records). Look at Emmitt Smith? He goes to the Cardinals because he didn't want to hang it up. Easy decision my ass. This ain't a matter of Joe Schmoe deciding if he should retire from Walgreens.

Funny how Green Bay management is willing to give him the time he wants to take, but a bunch of nobody's think otherwise. And those nobody's include the dumbass nerds on ESPN as well.

And Favre isn't the one making the big commotion about it. He didn't call the last press conference, one of his wife's dumb assistant's did.

Let's face it, for all the grumbling from the pundits...it makes good copy during the off season (they love it, don't let them kid you), and everyone is making way more out of it than Favre, or even the Packers themselves.

He could wait until training camp and it won't change what the Packers are doing. Everyone knows Favre won't be playing much longer and they have to get another QB ready...and they aren't sure if it's Rogers, so regardless of Favre's decision, they are already making plans for life without him.

Another 30 pick season might allow him to surpass Warren Moon in regards to interceptions thrown.

You know I have the same passion as you for football, so I'm not going to let these insults slide by without a reply!

Largent and Bettis meant the same thing to their cities as does Brett Favre. Insulting a guy like Largent by saying he never went to a Super Bowl so it was easier for him to retire is wrong. I'll even take the Largent thing to the next level. He DID play for crappy teams, that had no hope of winning anything. I never remember him coming out in the press to say he was holding off on his decision to play until he found out how good the Seahakws are. Bettis stepped up and accepted a lesser role on the team just because he wanted to play. If Favre wants to show some real class, maybe he should do the same.

You make me laugh as well. Brett Favre is NOT football. Heck, he isn't even the best QB to play the game. OK, so in your corner of the country he means the world to you, that's fine. Leave it at that. Don't act like deciding to retire is something that honestly takes seven months. The fact that you seem to think his selfish actions are OK because of what he did in the past is laughable as well. What are the Packers supposed to do here? They have to wait on Favre. Should they force the Almighty One into a decision, and have rabid Green Bay fans like yourself burn Lambeau down for treating Mr. Favre so "poorly"? They're screwed in this deal. He'll make a choice someday they hope. I'll bet if you get those guys like Thompson behind closed doors, they will tell you they are not happy about how this is turning out. In public, they have to act like it's OK.

Amen! What's next, a petition to rename the Lombardi trophy? Yes, the man was great for the city of Green Bay, but NO city should be strung along. As him not wanting to leave football, because he'd won a Super Bowl , I disagree. If he was so unwilling to "give all of that up", why did he say playing for another team wasn't an option? Besides, he ain't giving "all of that up", because he don't have it! As for his accomplishments, they're etched in stone, dude. They can't be undone. You football fans in Green Bay are like guitar players. You refuse to believe that there are others. :rollno:

I'll bet behind close doors they don't care, in-so-far as how they need to address the QB issue. I really don't see why this is even a big issue. It's not like Favre planned on playing for another five years.

Everyone, and I mean everyone knows Favre needs to be replaced, and have known for some time now. Whether he comes back to play another year or not doesn't change the fact that they have to address it. If he retires, they will play someone else. If he doesn't, they will still need to get another QB some playing time. It's a non-issue. The national media is making it a bigger issue than it really is. You should read what the guys (who actually cover the Packers and have more inside info than the boobs at ESPN), have written about it.

As far as being selfish...Aikman said he did the EXACT same thing. He wasn't sure if he wanted to come back because he wasn't so sure he wanted to come back and play on a Dallas team that wasn't doing what he thought they should to be competitive (and that his concussions weren't even being factored into it). It was all about the decision to come back and play for a loser, or retire. The SAME issue Favre is struggling with. That was from an article written by Aikman about Favre's decision (that he and Brett had discussed).

Personally, I'd hate to see him come back and play for this loser of a team. I have absolutely no stake (as a fan) in his decision one way or another. That's why I find it so laughable that everyone is so upset about someone else's personal decision.

We're it my decision to make, I'd say the same thing to everyone...

Go watch baseball.

Favre Promises to Reveal Retirement Plans Prior to 8th Game of the Season

(Kiln, MS) Brett Favre, the NFL's only three time MVP and starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers for the last 13 years notified the team today that he will definitely make up his mind about whether to return for 2006 sometime before the halfway point of the season.

"I know this is somewhat of an unorthodox position," Favre said with a laugh. "But I figure to really know for sure if my heart is still in it I need to watch several weeks worth of games on television and then see how I feel. After all, even in Mississippi the grass doesn't grow much after October and I might find myself bored to tears on Sunday afternoons wishing I had something to do."

Favre said he realizes he gives up $10 million dollars if he decides to hang them up. "The money is nice, I won't lie about that. But there are just so many John Deere riding mowers a man can buy before the neighbors start getting jealous."

Favre said he appreciates all the moves Packers GM Ted Thompson has made this off-season to make the team more competitive. "I couldn't be more pleased," said Favre. "What quarterback in his right mind wouldn't relish the opportunity to throw touchdown passes to guys like Marc Boerighter and Ruvell Martin? Shoot, they could be my ticket to another Super bowl."

Rumors that Favre is upset about the negative comments Packers wider receiver Javon Walker recently made about the team and about Favre in particular aren't true. Said Favre, "I could care less what that little punk ###### thinks. Doesn't he know that Terrel Owens said if I had been the Eagles quarterback they would have won the Super bowl? The only remarks I'm concerned about are the parting comments from Ryan Longwell. If he screwed up my chances of getting a free dinner at Applebee's whenever I want then I just might retire for real".

Attempts to reach Ted Thompson for comment were unsuccessful. His assistant said he was attending a foosball tournament at the Brokeback Mountain Nudist Colony and Resort in Montana and wouldn't be back until Monday

I also totally agree, Mike

As was stated, sure he needs to retire eventually and a replecement will be found... But how much time is being WASTED right now regarding prepping for the upcoming season. Who's starting QB? No one seems to know. Does that affect the team? Anyone who says it doesn't is crazy IMO. Does Favre care? Seems like he couldn't care less to me. It's all about Favre and NOTHING about the Green Bay packers.

And to say, "I might retire, I just wanna hold out and see if my team is going to suck or not this year, then I'll decide" is pathetic and shows a blatant lack of respect for the team and the game.

Bettis was used as an example and that's the ONLY reason I'm mentioning it (cause I'm certainly biased toward Pittsburgh). As Mike saide, Bettis took pay cuts 2 years in a row, and also stepped back for Duce and Willie to fill in the starting roles. All while playing the role of mentor to his replacements. He publicly said he wasn't thrilled, but was willing to do whatever it took to help himself as well as the TEAM. Even if you loathe Pittsburgh, I don't see how anyone can find his actions anything less than commendable. On the opposite end of that coin, Favre is doing just the opposite. Even if you love Green Bay, I don't see how anyone can find HIS actions anything less than reprehensible.

Actually, I'd love to watch him play for 5-10 more years.
Declining Billy Bob Favre's crew of scrub wideouts and patchwork O-line facing the dominant young Bears D is something this Bears fan is looking forward to. As they say, history repeats itself.

Happy days are here again!

I hope you Packers fans have plenty of highlight vids of the glory days, cuz the future is ugly for the piss yellow and puke green!!!!

Bear Down, Chicago Bears.
Make every play clear the way to victory!
Bear Down, Chicago Bears.
Put up a fight with a might so fearlessly!

We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation,
With your T formation.

Bear Down, Chicago Bears.
And let them know why you're wearing the crown.

You're the pride and joy,
of all Illinois.

Chicago Bears, Bear Down!

St. Bettis. LOL. Favre has restructured his contract numerous times to help with salary cap issues. Of course I wish he'd make up his mind, but at this point, it aint that big of a deal

A pay cut, and a restructure are not the same thing. Up here in Seattle, Walter Jones recently restructured his deal. He's getting the same amount of money, they just moved it around.

Put yourself in Favre's shoes.

You've already won a Super Bowl (one of two you've been in). You've won three MVP awards. You are close to breaking almost every QB record on the books. You already are a millionaire several times over.

You've started every game in your career, playing through broken bones, torn ligaments, concussions, etc. (and played admirably and won, I might add...sticking your neck out for the TEAM, as it were). You've played through your wife's cancer, the death of your father, the death of your brother-in-law, your hometown area practically wiped off the map by a hurricane...in short, you've given it your all for your team...for your entire career.

Then this past season you've played with a sub-par O-Line and different running backs and recievers every game, all season long only to post your worst career numbers, and the worst team record since you joined the team.

You're close to those records, there is all that money and you still have the desire to play, but you'd have to come back and play for a team that might suck as bad as last year.

Yes, a very easy decision.

You accept all these talented players like T.O., Walker, etc. who whine and demand to be traded and switch teams like they change socks...players who have no concept of loyalty, because they are just doing it because the NFL is a business.

But Favre? No, don't cut him any slack, because even though he's given the Packers a Super Bowl (not single handedly, but they surely wouldn't have even been there without him), and he's given everything he had to the Packers his entire career.

No, he should just make up his mind already, because it's so easy to do...especially being on the outside looking in.

Sundogue said:

No, I'm not saying that. I just think six or more months is too long. This has gone beyond the "I don't know if my body can handle it", to "I'll only play if the team is going to be good". That is just plain wrong, no matter what player we are talking about. If Bettis came out and said that, I'd be all over him too. I don't care if Aikman took that long too. He was just as selfish then. Yeah, my opinion means zilcho, but this does make for some good conversations for us football junkies.

While none of us play pro football, we have all watched athletes equal to the caliber of Brett Favre make the same decision in much less time. Favre's situation is not unique.

You're right it's not truly unique. Lots of great players have had to wrestle with this decision. But Favre has given an awful lot to one ballclub over his career, and they in turn are giving him time to decide.

It seems everyone outside Green Bay has all kinds of opinions on it...and his decision makes no difference to them, yet they still harp on it like their lives depend on it. Even Green Bay's future doesn't depend on it.

If he makes a decision he is the one that has to live with it. The Packers will go on regardless. It's a personal decision.

If I were to retire from a company that I gave my all to, I doubt how they felt about it would play into my decision much. It's my life, and I'm the one who has to live with that decision the rest of my life. The company would go on regardless. Teams throughout the NFL cut players all the time and they sure as hell don't care how it affects the player...much like corporations don't give a crap about the people they fire or layoff.

Sundogue said:

Hats off to you my friend. I appreciate your passion for your team. We've kind of ganged up on you in this thread, but you've kept your cool. Most impressive.

You're right, Brett Favre and the Packers front office don't care what any of us think. What we do think has no bearing on the matter. It is still fun to talk about it though. None of us here will ever have a front office job in the NFL, so here is our chance to pretend. :D
