NHL 2008

Hello fellow NHLers.........

This is my first post this year. You see, The Stars, who actually were in the conference finals last year, are now the worst team in the NHL.:hmm:

For those looking for any learned analysis as to why this has happened, can't really help. Bad defense, worse goaltending, and the Stars never have been a team that will outscore you, so there you go.:(

And this weekend we learn that Brendon Morrow, our Captain and William Wallace imitator, has a torn ACL and he's done for the year.:bawl:

So, play on lads!! KSerg....... I will miss our spirited debates.

Welcome! As much as I root against the Stars, I respect the organization as a team (despite their signing of Avery ;) ) Morrow is definitely an ice warrior, and Modano is a player who I've always respected - pretty much always a class act. Hopefully you'll stick around for the discussion despite the Stars' current turmoil. I've gotta believe Turco's going to turn it around though.

For the most part the folks in the thread have been pretty highbrow. Last season's playoff discussion was some of the best hockey banter I've enjoyed in quite some time! Glad to have you with us!

Didn't Dallas steal their team from Minnesota? It was the Northstars, but now the Stars. I remember the Northstars.

I think one of our guys, Sydor, used to play for Dallas. I could be wrong though. I remember Mike Modano too. Didn't he screw around and get in trouble at the Olympics a few years ago?

They were the Northstars. Norm Green moved them. It was an ugly situation, but an owner who's a jerk doesn't taint the players on the ice imho.

Sydor was a stalwart for the Stars for years.

The Olympics issue happened in Nagano. Some rooms were trashed, Keith Tkachuk was the big offender from what I heard. Chris Chelios paid for the damages out of his own pocket.

What he said...........

The Stars have always been the kind of guys you liked to root for; high character guys. It makes the performance here in the first 20 games so weird. No heart, no will,...... When everything else is equal (and many nights it is in this league) heart, passion, and will carry the day.:rollno:

Looks like the Sharks signed Clod LePew to a tryout contract.

This surprises me with the way the Sharks are clicking. I know Clod has a history of cranking it up in the playoffs, which is an example that the Sharks imho could learn from. Still, I wonder how its going to affect the locker room chemistry.

If he sticks, I wonder if McCarty will try to dance with him again for old time's sake. :)

Kserg, I'm looking forward to hearing the take of a diehard Sharks fan who actually knows hockey on this one.

I'm a long time San Jose season ticket holder. The majority of Sharks fans think he is one of the dirtiest players to ever play the game and hope that he never sees a minute of ice time in San Jose, myself included. The hit on Kris Draper was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. Every time I think of Lemieux I think "I can't believe I shook his freakin' hand". :eyebrow:

The best comment I saw on a Sharks board I frequent was this:
"Claude Lemieux is so dirty, it makes Bryan Marchment look like Milan Michalek." :D

I'm excited that I get to see the Blackhawks in person tonight! :hyper:

I guess you also loved the McSorley stick swing on Brashear and the Bertuzzi punking of Moore. :scowl: Cheap crap like that has absolutely no place in the sport.

Yeah, because a broken jaw/nose is as bad as a broken neck.

You caught me!

Seriously though, it sparked a great rivalry. Yeah it was dirty, but considering the great games that resulted from it, I can safely say that I loved it.

Disagree if you want.

Wow... One might disagree with statement that is sane, to this, one can one say "wow"...

By that logic murder is good because it makes for one hell of a cops episode...

WooHoo the Pens looked good tonight!! I got to watch this one. Malkin throws down four points on a hat trick and an assist. His buddy Ovehkin did the same thing tonight.

I'm riding a pretty big high myself Mike. Flyers have gone on a 6 game winning streak and moved from last in the conference to 6th. The teams they have faced on this winning streak weren't any huge challenges. I mean the Thrashers? the Stars? They've beaten teams that are desperate for wins; which can be a dangerous situation. All the games have been close so their offense is starting to slow down a bit, but as far as I can tell Gagne still sits in 2nd in points as well as Carter sits in 2nd in goals (not sure if Geno will pass him with this surge).

is SJ going to loose one any time soon? Sheesh.

Diggin up the ole NHL Thread. Flyers' winning streak snapped in OT. I say a Richards goal negated by a too many men penalty . While I didn't see it happen apparently there was a miscue on the part of D-man Alberts. It probably didn't help that he joined the celebration after the goal :rollno:. That seemed to take the wind out of Philly's sails.

We at least get a point and can hopefully rebound against the Leafs.

Speaking of the Leafs, Brian Burke is now GM in Toronto.

Center Ice guys; do you get the games broadcast on NHLTV? I don't get any of the regular content on that channel and they aren't broadcasting the Toronto Philly game on the regular channels. This happened last season too when all but two teams were playing on one night (second game of the season for the Flyers). I don't want to miss this game will be a little upset if they don't broadcast it. Why am I paying for this if they are skipping games and they only seem to do it to the Flyers. Commencing Phone Call Now.

I get all the games offered via the Center Ice package on DirecTV. Usually the only time they don't show one on the Center Ice channels is if it's being offered on a network station or Versus.

But what irritates me is that almost all the games are shown in High Def EXCEPT for most of the Flyers games. For some reason, most of their games are not in High Def.

Found out that NHLTV is part of Comcast's Sports Entertainment package and not Center Ice. Seeing as I'm not much of a sports guy with the exception of hockey; I added the package and will probably cancel it after the game.

I don't have an HDTV (yet), so I'm not too disappointed with that. I will say however that very rarely do they show Flyers commentary. In this season there have only been 2 or 3 CSN broadcasts out of the 20 or so games I've watched. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the Flyers are owned by Comcast.

EDIT: Carter Takes over the league in Goals last night with 16 on the season. Keep it up Carts.
