NHL 2008

Suspended indefinitely by the league. Stars owner said if they didn't, he would have been suspended by the team.

He's not going to finish the season in Dallas.

He can go play with Ray Emery in Russia.

In other news, after dismantling the Leafs the Sharks tie the all time NHL record for best record after 25 games (21-3-1). :hyper:

OK..... First things first, Avery is a douche. NOBODY in the Stars room can stand him. I think he is a huge part of the problems facing the Stars this year. I consider him Brett Hull's first major mistake as Co-GM. If he nevers skates with them again that's fine with me....BUT!!!

What did he really do here? Did he seriously injure a player with a cheap shot? Did he call out the officials over bad calls after a game? Did he question the integrity of the league office? Did he accuse Bettman of shady dealings with the Mob? Nope.....

This isn't a case of someone shouting "fire" in a crowded theater. This is a free speech issue. The NHL doesn't have the right to muzzle its players regarding non-game related subjects. Was it rude and mean? Of course. The guy is a miserable human being. But that's not something you get to suspend people for.

I fully expect Avery to "lawyer up" and sue the Stars and the NHL. He'll win, too.

The League said the suspension was issued in accordance with the provisions of By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey."

He is only suspended indefinitely pending a hearing, so it's not like he's booted for life.

If it does go to court (which I really doubt), Avery will lose. By signing and NHL contract, he agrees to the terms of the NHL Constitution for Conduct. Free speech or not, he broke that agreement.

The crux of the issue, imho, is that he made the comments to the media, and they were obviously premeditated, judging by how he was asking the cameras to be turned on. If he'd have said it ON THE ICE, it likely would have stayed on the ice, although he'd have been hammered by several of the Calgary players, particularly Phaneuf.

Once it comes off the ice and into the media, it crosses the line and goes too far. While his comment is still vile, it reminds me of how Reg Dunlop got into the goalie's head in Slap Shot (Paul Newman R.I.P.). It was no longer trash talking, but he was actively representing the NHL and the Stars organization with the comment that was disparaging to women. Had he said "ex-girlfriends" no big deal. Had it been an idle comment in the locker room with no media present, it'd be locker room ****-swinging. But by putting it in the media like he did, he went way too far. I'm just glad the Wings got rid of him in 2003 I believe. Ironically, when he was with the Wings, class acts like Yzerman, Lidstrom, and Shanahan kept him in line.

There is no shortage of high character guys with the Stars. Sadly, there is no keeping this guy in line anymore. He's almost a cartoon version of himself now. He has made NO attempt to become part of the room in Dallas.

There was a very telling scene several nights ago. He was on the ice when the Stars scored. As is tradition, the 5 that were on the ice made a trip down the bench for some knuckles with the team........... The only problem was that only 4 of them did it. Avery just opens the door and sits down. You should have heard his teammates after this all went down. I promise you, if he never skates with them again they are fine with it.

I'm hearing that there is more to this story.....much more. Stay tuned

But that's the question.......Did he break that agreement? If he takes it to court I like his chances.

Absolutely he did.

Inappropriate comments to the media about an opponent's personal life? That does reflect poorly on the league and the game. You can say the most awful things on the ice, but once they are said in front of cameras, the situation changes.

That being said, I've gained so much respect for Dallas because of this. Hearing his own teammates speak out about it (Turco, in particular) makes me respect them a lot more.

Here's the weird part: He signed a $16M/4 year, every damn penny guaranteed. I wonder what the cap implications are?

I hope the Stars cut this fool loose. I just wonder if they can....:scowl:

Tom Hicks as an owner is infinitely classier than Norm Green was (the d-bag who relocated the Minnesota North Stars). Mike Modano has always been one of the classiest players in the league, and his long captaincy prior to the anointing of Morrow set a great tone that many veterans such as Turco follow.

Just wanted to pull up the old NHL 2008 thread and give props to my man Jeff Carter on his OT winner in North Carolina. Still tied with Vanek for the goal lead in the League. Nitty looked awesome last night in net. I hope Stevens starts rewarding him with more starts.

Flyers lead the league with 11 shorthanded goals; the next closest team having only 6. Prolly helps that Philly is called....a lot. Good that their PK is impressive as well.

I agree, Avery is a jerk. But he didn't attack the integrity of the game. Being an agitator, he probably just made a few games a little more exciting.:D Elisha Cuthbert doesn't seem to be offended. His language while crude wasn't over the top. He's no John Rocker. I could understand a small suspension, but I'm not sure what, if any, policies, or contracts he violated.
