NHL 2008

There i have to disagree. I like a good bruiser as a player just as much as the next guy, and i love hockey fights and hits, but I don't think a straight up dirty player is fun to watch. I like watching hockey too. It can't all be like slapshot or else it just becomes pro wrestling on ice. You are right though, agree or disagree with the mentality of it, more people will start to show interest when they watch that trashy hockey parody. I just don't generally regard those types as Hockey fans.

I was just instigating :) Its good for the sport of forum posting! Lemieux and Avery can both take a hike as far as I am concerned. BB might be right though, in that like I said, gimmicks like the publicity around Avery might increase ratings and popularity of hockey. Good for the game itself? HELL NO, and I don't think I would like the class of hockey "fans" that kind of gimmickery woud attract, but from the leagues financial standpoint, more people watching hockey is a good thing.

Here is the thing, I'll give you example from a different league. There are 2 football teams here, 49ers and raiders. Raiders attract types of fans that would like Avery and Lemieux. 49ers attract normal fans.
I refuse to go to any raiders game because I do not like that crowd. In fact, any normal person living here who is not raider fan will not go to raiders games because of that reason.
Why? Because if you go to 49er game and you are a fan of a team that is playing them you'll be ok, it's going to be some trash talking but all in fun. You go to raiders game and you will get beat up. In the end? 49ers sell out their games, Raiders get blacked out in THEIR OWN MARKET because they can't sell out a game. No one wants to go there.

My point? If league attracts fans that want to see Avery and Lemieux then normal fans will stop going to the games. I myself will completely turn away from NHL and start watching more college hockey. Lucky for me NHL at least try to keep the league about the game and keeps people who just go to see a fight from being hockey fans. So BB - if you want that kind of hockey I suggest you get into UFC. They don't even have to drop the gloves to fight. :rollno:

Fights are great, but that small part of hockey, VERY small part of hockey.

YEp, my sentiments exactly. It may boost the ratings and popularity, but not only does it create a lower class of fans, look whjat that kind of popularirty does to other sports. Look at racing! ONce it became a soap opera and got much more attention it got almost painful for race fans to watch. I put up with it for racing, football and baseball, I'd hate to have to put up with it in one of the remaining pro leagues with some sense of integrity to the actaul sport.

This is good for the game, guys like this:

I miss Kappy.

What a great spirit and passionate player.

About the Flyers/Rags

Philly laid down a little in the 3rd but managed to hang on winning 5-2

Rookie Claude Giroux gets his 2nd goal in two games and has a 3 point outing. The depth continues to show with goals from their 3rd and 4th lines!!!

Mike Richards is the player in the NHL to score 3 goals while his team was down 2 men. Crosby schmosby....Mike Richards is my favorite player in the league. I guess I'm a little biased.

A lot of traditional hockey fans are already disgusted with the game as it is played today. Bettmann and the league did a great job at chasing people away. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell that stupid trapezoid looking thing behind the net is.

So far, out of all people i know, you are the only one who is "disgusted".

That's not many, just you.

Not to sound like any more of a douche that i already had towards you - I am just interested - Do you play hockey?

I am going to stay out of this thread for next 2 hours as sharks game is on and i am not going to watch it live, waiting for my bros to start watching it.

When I was a kid I did.

Funny you say that. I don't know many people who actually think the NHL is going in a positive direction with all these stupid new rules.

On some rules i would agree with you. Delay of game for puck out of play is dumb because it delays the game even more then it should.

However, I think NHL is about the same as it always was. Just as fun to watch.

This looks like the right move to me: Pens fire Thierren. But I do feel bad for him. He did do a lot of good for this organization in the four years he has been here. Story is from ESPN.com.

Five points out, 25 to play. We got some work to do. This new guy was a not-so-great NHL player, but seemed to be alright as the coach of our AHL club.
