NHL 2008

It was an awkward hit, but not really a dirty hit, just at a bad time when Hossa didn't have a chance to brace for it. Still, the Wings showed up with a big mad-on after being humiliated by the Preds on Saturday (where NONE of them showed up). That was the wake-up call that may push them over the top again this year. Word is Hossa will be just fine.

Don't look now but the Wings just passed San Jose and Boston for the best record. I really don't think it matters a whole lot wether or not they finish with the best record (it matters more to San Jose who don't seem to be able to win at the Joe). But they seem to be dwelling at the right time.

On other fronts, I think Calgary definitely gained the most at the trade deadline picking up Okinen and leopold from Colorado. Calgary is the kind of a team that could sneak by a San Jose or Detroit in a playoff series, especially with Kippersof between the pipes.

Boston added Recchi and Matador for some depth, but no real impact.

San Jose added Moen, a good character guy. They've had some good pick ups but they haven't done it in the playoffs yet. And Detroit hasn't really had a complete line up all season. Speaking of which, Hosa, is out a week with a knee bruise and stiff neck, Holmstrom is skating with the team.

Pittsburgh picked up Bill Gurien and Chris Kunitz, But Gurien isn't Hosa or Ryan Malone and they miss Rutu to. I'm still not sure their are enough character guys on this team to go deep in the playoffs.

Philly Traded Uphsall for Carcillo and a pick for Kyle McLaren.

I'm sad to see Upshall go. He was a fast skater and last playoffs showed a lot of grit. In the end I think the Flyers need to clear up some cap space and Upshall seemed to be the most underachieving on the team. I know a lot of the guys had a bond with him, but that is sports for ya.

Carcillo fits the Flyer mold with his league leading 174 PIMs. Most people on the Flyers board aren't stoked on that stat but....meh. He'll add some intensity to the Flyers. I don't know if he is an objectionable player in the vein of LaPew or McSorely. His +/- sucks. Maybe it will get better with a team that doesn't suck (picked up from the Coyotes) We'll see.

McLaren....I don't know what they plan on doing with him. He's been in San Jose's minor system for a bit. Maybe they are looking for a veteran blueliner...who knows.

Play Calgary tomorrow; who has something like an 8-1 record against EC teams. I like Calgary. Jerome Iginla is one of my favorite players. I have a feeling Kipper is going to be a pain in the arse.

Token rah rah for the Wings taking the points lead, but with San Jose having games in hand, it's still way up for grabs. IMHO it's going to be a big deal since the Wings/SJ regular season series has played out with the home team winning every game. Plus with Grier and Roenick out with injuries, if they come back in time for the playoffs, the Sharks will get a boost (though the Wings haven't been at 100% health for quite some time either).

I'm not surprised the Wings stood pat at the deadline due to their cap restrictions, but I've been pleasantly surprised to see the 4th liners picking it up. Kopecky is actually playing some great hockey the last few games (though his checking fail against St. Louis was pretty humorous). Draper and Maltby are starting to look like they don't want to be sitting come playoff time. For most of the season, it seemed if you wanted to kill the offense from a Wings line, you'd put Draper or Kopecky out with them, but not now.

Ozzie has been looking great since the time off (the Predators debacle imho can't be pinned on the goalies - the whole team didn't show. Heck, the Talkbass NHL thread denizens would have put up a better fight in that game).

Some interesting moves at the deadline, but no blockbusters imho. Plus, the perfect waiver pickup opportunity was missed. Be honest, who else would have liked to see Miroslav Satan in a Devils jersey?

Good for Phoenix.

They were the real winners at this deadline.

Unlike other bubble teams, they essentially admitted that this isn't their year, which is the truth. At least they don't have some Oilers-esque ridiculous dreams of winning.

1st rounder, Upshall, Lombardi, Prucha, Dawes, and Kalinin, 2nd rounder, and a 4th.

Kalinin is a solid replacement for Morris (hopefully he'll fit more into the system than he did with the Rangers...more like the Sabres). Dawes and Upshall are both younger guys, who hopefully can develop a bit. Lombardi is a solid 3rd line center...

Philly Traded Uphsall......

Oh my gosh, I just read about this. I thought he was one of your good guys. I dislike it when $$$ drives personnel decisions, but that is sports nowadays.

We picked up some old guy named Guerin. I guess he was good like 15 years ago. Certainly not going to bring the same spark Hossa brought us at the deadline last year. Should I be excited about picking up this guy?

So one day and one period after the trade deadline the Flyers look like a bunch of monkeys tryin to.........

4-0 Flames going into the 1st intermission .

Looks like we should have kept Upshall and dumped some of these D guys who can't seem to keep from giving away the puck.

Pens win again, in Florida this time 4-1.

Sid comes back and nets a goal. Fedotenko picked up an assist, and the new guy we got had an assist as well. I did not see this game live, but I will try to find it online tonight.

Horrible game for the Flyers. As I was watching them, I was thinking, "Oh yeah, that was a real smart move. :eyebrow: Get rid of Scotty Upshall, one of the only players on the team with blazing speed." Briere can be pretty quick, but it looks like he re-injured the groin again. Who knows how long he'll be out this time.

One thing for sure about Upshall: He never takes it easy when he's on the ice. I don't know much about Carcillo, but Upshall was a player who made things happen. His speed and hustle created turnovers, even if his stats were not outstanding. I'm not liking this move at all...

I swear they threw a going away party for Scottie; the night before, and were all hungover for the game. It was ugly but eye opening to see how a good defense works and how the Flyers don't have one. Turnovers were killing them as well.

I didn't even notice Carcillo last night except between the whistles.

Briere re-injured his groin area but they are saying that it is not abnormal. ATM they are saying he is out against Nashville. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't out the rest of the season.

At this point I doubt the Flyers will go far in the playoffs.

Guys....should I be excited about Guerin? Does he have anything left?

-Mike

I can't say that I know too much about Bill Guerin. He was the captain of the basement dwelling Isles if that says anything.

I'd expect him to be retiring in a few years if not after this season. He's 38 and getting a little long in the tooth.

Obviously the Pens have their captain in Sid but Guerin should add some veteran leadership to a young team. Probably something they were looking for in Satan and weren't getting.

He's been on 8 teams counting the Pens over a 17 year career....that's a little discouraging.

Flyers looked sharp tonight in beating the Predators (who came in with a 6-game winning streak). The Flyers seemed to control the game all night. Had a 2-0 lead for quite awhile, then Nashville cut it to 2-1. Flyers came right back and Lupol scored his second of the game to give them the two goal lead again. Added another late goal for a 4-1 victory. Biron looked real sharp tonight in goal.

I was impressed by Biron. That save on Erat was unbelievable. If a youtube of it comes up I'll post it.

I liked what I saw out of Carcillo. I think he was a bit nervous on Thursday and last night seemed a little settled in.

Giroux gets his 5th. I like that kid.

Lupul gets his 20th on the season...giving the Flyers six players with 20 or more goals (For the second straight season).

Edit: Mike; to answer your question on Upshall. He was basically our 9th top forward and a solid 3rd line winger. He was right on the cusp of a role player and only had 7 goals on the season before the trade. He was fast but also gritty. At the beginning of the season he seemed to have trouble staying on his feet. I think he may have a little reputation as a diver. I liked him a bunch because he worked hard every night; but I think he'll have more opportunities in Phoenix.

I'm not sure how Phoenix's lines shape up but I know Upshall has already seen time on the PP which is a huge vote of confidence by the Dog's coaching staff. I think he could be solid on their 2nd line.

Did anyone else see Fernandez score on his own net today? Or when he came out of the net to miss a puck that was feet wide of the post, bounced around to the NYR player, and in? What a disgrace.

Watched the highlights.....That was sad. Can't let those soft goals go in during clutch situations.

The Rags re-signed Avery (actually claimed him of waivers I think). I hope he warms up to his second chance and starts playing some hockey instead of running his mouth.
